I'd like a recommendation for a Civ game.

My criteria are that I'd like:
Medium weight (in the region of about 2.5-3 difficulty on the BGG scale)
Not more than about 2 hours playing time
Abstracted war - My family dont really like war where you lose people / equipment / board position, but losing points (like in 7w) is ok.

Games I have already tried:
Through the Ages, Sid Meiers Civilisation, Clash of Cultures - Too long. DId not enjoy the war aspect in Civ or CoC.
7 Wonders - Tried and liked
Roll though the ages - Played to death, and too light

I think that you'd like Antiquity and Roads & Boats, but they are both heavier than 3 (more like 4). Time-wise, they'll play 2 hours with 2 players.

Olympos is a good suggestion.

Nations is about to be released, a card-based Civ game like TtA only implemented very differently and much more accessible. Also, reportedly low downtime and plays up to 5. What's cool about it is it has a built in handicap system, so newbs and experts can play each other.

Ooo - I picked up a copy of Nations at Essen. I was hoping someone would tell me it fits my criteria (although it's 40 mins per player I think).

I'll have to try Nations at BGG.CON. At the moment that reception from early reviews are not super promising. But it's a civ, which means, I have to give a whirl.

Quote:
For what players is it good for:
-You like civ games
-You like short turns and downtime
-You like middle weight games (this is not a brain burner!)

For what players it isn't:
-You need a map
-You need direct confrontation
-You need dice
-You want to have the possibility to plan everything the evening before the game

I've never played it..... but you already own it, so little lost by breaking it out (other than turning your group against Civ games for all eternity)

However, everything I've written is easily verifiable

Innovation is in theme, but probably too light for you, and my personal experience with it is such that I really can't recommend the actual gameplay.

History of the World is a game I can wholeheartedly recommend as the "lighter, actually playable version of Civ" and the Updated Version is supposedly even better, although I have yet to personally play that one.

I'll think of something witty to put here...

Antike and Phoenicia are my favourite (historical) civs.
Edit - I should add that there is zero war in Phoenicia.
