So he loves and is obsessed with all things games. He wants a really strong theme and doesn't like a lot lf strategy which he differentiates from tactics which he does like. He likes having different types of games also. Two player is a must since I am his partner mostly. Games he likes: Escape!, Eldersign, King of Tokyo, Seasons, 7Wonders, Resistance. Games he loves: Cosmic Encounter, LOTR deck builder, Scotland Yard/Mister X, Tales of the Arabian Nights. He does not like Feld games (which are my favorite....Trajan, anyone?) or Twilight Struggle (he despises it, much to my dismay). When we are compromising we play Lords of Waterdeep or Ascension.

Feel free to ask questions....I am looking for a couple of good surprise games for him. Thanks!

Rattus may fit the bill.

Mostly tactics and who doesn't like dying off to the plague.

But, it is a cube pusher, theme is a bit weak.

Android Netrunner was too complex and strategic for him. Checking out the rest though.

It seems like he likes lighter, shorter games.
I wonder, what does he think of Castles of Burgundy, which you enjoy quite a lot?

Based on the list of likes and loves, I would suggest Kingdom Builder

For something more thematic, Galaxy Trucker is sure to please.

Smash Up! is very thematic with lots of tactical opportunities. I prefer this 2- or 3-player. With more players it tends to go on a bit long.

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is incredibly thematic.

Perhaps Robinson Crusoe, which may be too strategically heavy, but has tons of theme.

He has said he thinks he would like Agents of Smersh but I've had a tough time finding it. Castles of Burgundy is probably his favorite Feld (and by favorite I mean most tolerated) but still finds it too strategic and not thematic enough for him.

Agents of SMERSH is sort of the spy game version of Tales of the Arabian Nights. Has solo or co-op.

Fury of Dracula (second edition) is Scotland Yard but with the bad guy leaving traps for his pursuers. Also it has combat.

If he likes deck builders there is Dominion, or maybe the Dice builder Quarriors! or even the Chip builder Puzzle Strike, where you have a bag of chips instead of cards. All of these are good 2 player games.

+1 Kemet! Nothing more thematic than being an Egyptian god and sending a gigantic scarab and a whole bunch of troops teleporting into battle! Gameplay is very sleek and easy to learn, a lot of replayability with the power cards, and no dice rolling in battle. Most of my games with my husband are under an hour.

Yes, Galaxy Trucker is fine with 2.

Also maybe check out Neuroshima Hex! or Summoner Wars: Master Set.

He considers 7 Wonders and Ascension thematic enough? If so, I'd recommend games like Race for the Galaxy or Glory to Rome (weaker 2 player, but still good). Eminent Domain also would work pretty well. Glen More has a theme of sorts.

Agricola is very thematic and is more tactical than strategic, but it looks rather strategic and has elements of both, so that would be a tougher sell.

LOL. He has other redeeming qualities and will occasionally play the games I like with me so I'll keep him.

No, Ascension and 7 Wonders aren't really thematic enough for him but they are compromise games and I would say 7 wonders is going down in popularity for him.

Short and luck and lots of choices and lots of themes. If it was only theme I might be able to get him to play Twilight Struggle with me. =)

The Manhattan Project might be worth trying. It is more thematic than LOW for him and deeper thinking for you.

Puerto rico would be good, but it isn't really 2p, but RFTG like someone mentioned is like PR and 2p (advanced rules for 2p is good)

Mr. Jack in New York - Two player deduction of Jack the Ripper, take a look

Neuroshima Hex! - Great tactical game, theme may or may not be strong enough. You can buy the cardboard one, or the one on sale for IOS/Android right now, and play it on a tablet (no hidden information, so pass-and-play works great). May not be enough theme, but the electronic version is only a couple bucks to try out.

Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation - Variation on Stratego, with LOTR characters and map . Nice art, etc.

I just picked up Nature of the Beast: Prairie vs. Polar which is definately heavy in theme, and interesting combo of cards/combat. Easier then netrunner. Still forming an opinion about it, but take a look at the reviews.

Your hubby sounds quite a lot like me so I feel pretty qualified to comment

I second Agents of SMERSH, other games I've found really immersive are Clash of Cultures, Merchants & Marauders and the best two player game ever (though out of print and pricey on the second hand market Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit.

I really think buying Castles of Burgundy would be a terrible idea, it has no theme and if people enjoy thematic games you aint going to like it. I know it has dice but they're no fun in Feld games. Same with Kingdom Builder its far to abstract for a thematic game.

Solo but awesome games might have you consider Ambush!, Nemo's War or Dawn of the Zeds (Second edition).

Finally I do love Zombicide for thematic fun zombie killing.
