When it first came out, the game was designated for 2-6 players, and despite the rule changes for the new edition (officially 3-6, although we think that 6 is quite stretching it), it is still very much playable with 2 players. We found in numerous rounds that the game benefits from a couple slight tweaks to make the 2-player version more competitive and consequently more fun.

NEW SCORING: When you reach a lap finish, only the player with the most points gets the award points, i.e., the lap finish card. The other player gets nothing. But … each player also gets to keep the actual points calculated to determine the winner. This way it is possible to accumulate a lot more points in even one round, and one can, for example, still win the game with only one of the finish cards. (Keep in mind, you now need a notepad and pencil.)

NEW STRATEGY: Dice Run is a tricky game because it at first appears like the luck factor is quite large, especially in 4-or-more-player games. But it doesn’t so much matter that you get your target dice ahead of the others. Rather: Try to get as many dice that best fit one of your target cards (in number or color) into the first group. In the 2-player variant, however, there are a lot more turns before you reach the finish cards so there is a lot more time to manipulate the course. Try to get as many of your actual target dice into the leading position because you will more often than not actually manage it. Suddenly bluffing becomes part of the game. There is time to confuse your opponent by continuously moving forward one of the other dice.

We’ve played this variant many times and the 2-player variant more often than not is even more fun than larger rounds. Give it a try …
