Historically I've stripped the game text off the URL, i.e.:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/106/

instead of:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/106/mystery-rummy-jac...

Am I overthinking things here? Is the verbose URL with the game name just as guaranteed to be permanent as the shortened version?

It's just there for search engine optimization, as I understand it, and has no effect on the target of the link. I assume that BGG strips anything after the game id (106) and then replaces it with the game's name anyhow. For example:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/106/this-doesnt-make-...

works just fine for me.

Don't use a url link at all. Use a game link. Like this: Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper

Probably should have been more clear - this is for inbound links from outside, such as my blog.

It's actually for human readability, not SEO, although some search engines may end up optimizing based on it.
