I'm a scary clown!
At a recent game night, members of LIBO got to play a game of China. Michael, Bill, Anna Maria, Andrew, and Chris were the participants.

Michael made a very early strong play in the territory of Wei, placing 3 consecutive homes in the region, while the other players spent their turns spreading themselves out. Chris placed homes in Han and Chi, Andrew places in Han and Lu, Bill placed in Qi and Yan, and Anna Maria places in Chin and Shu.

Because of Michael’s concentrated start, he subsequently managed to construct the first string of 4 consecutive homes, in Wei. Andrew was able to follow closely afterwards with a 4 consecutive homes that ran through Han and Lu. Anna Maria joined the early birds with a string of 4 homes of her own in Shu.

Bill, on the other hand, was the first to being to concentrate on emissaries, placing 2 early on, in Wei. Meanwhile, Michael expanded his row of homes into Chin, bringing his consecutive home count to 6. Chris began to attempt to wrest control by placing emissaries of his own.

As the players continued to place homes (and some emissaries), regions began to get crowded, and subsequently a rapid pace of scoring began, as each area on the board became full. Chin was the first region to score, giving Anna Maria, Michael, and Chris points. Lu scored quickly afterwards, giving points to Andrew and Michael. Then came Qi to score, with Bill being the sole beneficiary. Moreover, since he had placed a fortress (the only one in play at that point), he was able to score an impressive 10 points for Qi. Next Shu scored, giving Anna Maria the sole points for that region.

Han scored next, giving Andrew and Chris points. At this point in the game, Andrew had managed to construct the longest string of homes with 8, one of which was built on a fortification. Chris and Bill continued to have an emissary fight in the regions of Wei and Han, repeatedly trying to regain the majority in from the other in those 2 regions. The last region to score was Wei, with Michael, Chris, and Andrew all scoring.

In the end, both Michael’s and Andrew’s impressive string of homes couldn’t compete with the combination of Bill’s home placement, as well as his well-placed emissaries. The final score was Bill 38, Michael 37, Andrew and Chris tied for 36, and Anna Maria with 20.
