Hello everyone,

It's been a while since this has been discussed. Since I know there are plenty of leagues that are pretty well established, I thought I'd bring the discussion back.

As the league I organize is wrapping up its current 'season', I'm curious how everyone structures their various A:NR Leagues. What are the pros and cons of your structure?

For our league, we have an established league night at the game store. There are three basic rules:
1 - Play a game, get a point. Win the game, get a bonus point.
2 - Limit of 1 match (2 games with each player playing both side) per opponent per league night
3 - If your opponent has 10+ more points than you, get double points (2 for the game, 4 if you win.)

At the end of a predetermined time, the top 8 point totals compete in an elimination bracket.

I designed the rules to encourage playing the game more than anything. Additionally, playing a variety of opponents and having the opportunity to make up missed league nights or an unfortunate losing streak.

Pros: It did that. Every league night saw lots of fun games. Almost everyone played almost everyone else at one point or another. And missed nights didn't put people out of the running.

Cons: As much as I didn't want attendance to be the determining factor or winning to be the pure determining factor, but a mixture of both.... attendance was a predominant factor as the top three positions represent the top 3 games played totals. There's more variance looking down the ranking list, but it's there.

Another con is seeding for the top 8 ends up being odd. Two of the best winning percentage players ended up rank 7 and 8 in league points. Jim (No.8) has a pretty good shot of taking me out first round. The 2/7 game is going to be epic though. It's not a huge deal, but it is a side effect of the system.

Still, I was very happy with how the league played out. I'm looking at tweaks for the next season, but I don't feel like an overhaul is necessary.

So... that's how our league is structured. How is yours?

There is a range in the skill level of our players and I don't want any system that penalizes losing. Additionally, I don't want any 'point protecting' to occur.

Player positive and encourage games, not discourage.

The best way to make games played not the deciding factor would be to quite simply make playing games not as important points-wise.

I think Elo is probably the best solution, as it considered games played and strength of schedule, getting rid of those worries.

That said, I understand not wanting to 'penalize' people for losing. One thing our league does to encourage play is achievements. We have a long list of achievements, and the harder the achievement, the more points you get.

So, an easy achievement might be playing as anarch, winning via flatline, or making 9 credits in a single turn.

A hard achievement might be to destroy 5 or more pieces of ice during a game, have a remote server with 7 rezzed ice on it, or have 8 pieces of hardware installed at the end of a game.

This did a few things:

1. Encouraged players to play a large amount of different decks, rather than just sticking to tourney style decks
2. Made the 'best' players in the league get out of the comfort zone and try some wacky stuff
3. served as a leveling factor for points, as many of the achievements rewarded trying something different, rather than simply winning games.
4. It is a lot of fun! Achievment 'whoring' is a good time, and even less skilled players have a good time with it.

Yeah, I was thinking about integrating Achievements in the next iteration of the league.

A few thoughts I had on that front were achievements for:

- winning as lesser used IDS (Prof, Cerebral, etc)
- Forfeit an agenda as a runner (data dealer, frame job)
- Win without installing an icebreaker
- Win without a rezzed piece of ETR ice
- Win with a Criminal Deck without playing an event

The other idea I had was 'Trophies'. Like Longest Road in Catan, 1 prize that the highest number pulls down the points. To take a trophy away, the number has to be surpassed:
- Most Brain Damage Tokens in a win
- Most Tags given (received could be another)
- Most BP
- Most Advancement counters on a piece of ice not named Ice Wall
- Most Link
- Most Ice installed in a win
- Least Ice installed in a win

Still just brainstorming, but it's definitely something I want to play with.

In the league I run, I now have 12-14 people on average. But we play only once a month.

I actually had to change the name, because "League" is too meaningful. Often, when asking people, they tought that since it was a league, missing the beginning of it meant they couldn't join. They also tought it was competitive play only. So now, we are called the Grid

The Grid Structure is very simple.

- You have to play the same identities for the night
- You get 2 prestige points for each win
- Players are ranked on points average per matchups. (Top 5 players only, 5 matchups minimum).
- A season is made of 6 nights.
- A tournament is held at the end of the season open to everyone including players that doesn't play in the league. Only league players can win the title tho.

I usually also randomly give swag to players, like ffg season kit stuff.

So we are very casual about it. I have a stats website with identities win percentage and usage percentage along with a player ranking in which I display only the top 5 players. The ranking doesn't mean anything and doesn't give any perks. It's only for show. The end of season tournament is the only competitive part of it.

I found out that most players are just happy to play the game and do not really care about rankings. If on a night you want to try out new decks, you can go ahead and lose with it, it won't affect anything.

I also thought about adding Achievements, but that is a lot of work, so it's on ice for now.

Oh, we are also playing at a boardgaming club and not in a store. This has allowed me to put ads in most stores since none of them had enough players to do netrunner nights, but I suspect this will change eventually. Those new Store Championships just announced by FFG are great! I will organize at least 2 of them in stores, tugging along the Grid with me! It's great to be independent

I am in the midst of getting a decent size STL league going (about 6-8 people and growing) at the wizards wagon in the loop PM for any details.

Also on a side note, for the league i am starting i have made an achievement list for extra points/prize payouts in the league. They are pretty basic achievements such as "play as this id" or "win against this id" with a few more specific ones based on flatlining or amassing a certain amount of credits.

i just wanted to crowd source opinions on whether or not you guys think this would substantially add to the fun of playing in a league. (It should also be noted that the achievements are one time score only per league, so no farming)

I'm running my first league 4 week series in Auckland, NZ and am using this structure:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhRSnDNHvj9idHB...

(The sheet has two worksheets, one with our current scores & the other with the achievement lists.)
Thanks to Jeremy over at the Netrunomicon podcast for helping me get started.

Seems to be working out, we have 1 more week to go & the points at the top are close.

I love adding anything that can be divined from a basic report: IDs played, score, method of victory, and so on. I think the other stuff is super-fun, but I wouldn't have super-fun trying to fill out my bingo card on it mid-game. If a judge did it, more power to 'em!

Our league will start next month, and I'm still checking the numbers, but here is my idea:

People will play in our monthly encounters for 3 months. They get points by:
- Coming at the beginning and leaving at the end (2 points)
- Playing with different people (1 point)
- Bringing friends (6 points)
- Playing different factions (2 points)
- Winning the season (14 points)

After those 3 months, whoever gets 25 points gets a free data pack, and then I'll raffle a free data pack between everybody who didn't get the 25 points.
