Personally I would find dozens of dice harder to read at a glance when looking at the map.

Remember to buy some 12 and 20-sided dice.

... and when you have editions with the two different sides to the counters it becomes much easier to read control/influence.

Its not uncommon that both sides have influence above 6 in one country, especially in Europe.

If you buy dice, take D10s. Don't mix different dice types. Different shapes and different markings (dots or numbers) will just add confusion.

I would say that dice are no improvment over the counters, but that's just my humble opinion.

I just know one good online shop in Germany: http://www.spiele-offensive.de/wuerfel/index.php

There is a pair at my FLGS that I saw playing this way, it took longer because changing counters is quicker than dice.

They seemed happy with the set-up though.

The counters make it really easy to see whether and by whom each country is controlled. That would get complicated with dice.

Dice with 20+ faces will be harder to use, I agree - but I'd say that it would be a good idea to have a full set of counters up to, let's say, 15 instead of just 8 like it's now ... even if it happens maybe 1 game out 5 such "influence-battles" tend to occur, especially for 2-stabilities key-battlegrounds ( like Thailand, Italy or Panama ).

Wouldn't you need eight sets of dice
1 set d6 white with red pips.....Soviet influence. no control
1 set d6 red with white pips.....Soviet influence, with control
1 set d20 white on red
1 set d20 red on white
1 set d6 white on blue
1 set d6 blue on white
1 set d20 white on blue
1 set d20 blue on white

additionally, the white, no control, dice would not be as easily recognizable, as noted earlier, as to who owns them

When I have seen this done, it's almost always with d6. If it goes over 6 just have more than one die. Doesn't seem too bad.

Still prefer the counters though. Also your sleeves are less likely to catch on counters and move them around when you reach across the board. I really should wear t-shirts more.
