I've gotten into block wargames in the last year and am having a good time with them. I also like CDGs like Twilight Struggle and 1989.

Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage is an eventual buy for me. Cuba Libre or one of the other games in the COIN series also seems inevitable.

Maria seems utterly fascinating but the 3-5 hour time frame and specific player count of 3 (yes,mi know it can play 2, too) while interesting limits it's appeal to me just a bit. I think I would like the use of cards, the auction, and the balance of staying close to supply lines vs pushing forward for attack.

As you may note from my comments above, I'm more on the game end of wargames than on the simulation end.

So, any games out there that do something similar to Maria with a shorter time frame?

Cuba Libre will take 3-4 hours, longer as you learn to play.

If Maria interests you, maybe the game can be modded to suit your timeframe? you can play to a different win condition?

Columbia's Julius Caesar plays pretty quickly.

The player count is one of Maria's charms. There ain't
a lot of wargamish things that work well in three.

I'm enjoying Julius Caesar. It's a great little game.

Any suggestions regarding different win conditions? I hadn't really thought about that. I guess I need to continue exploring it.

Regarding the player count, you're right about this being one of its charms. It is the very thing that caught my attention in the first place. I guess my thought was that being both long and 3p it wouldn't hit the table very often.

Generally when designers make an abbreviated scenario, they do one of a few things.

1. Reduce the VPs, supply sources, etc. to win.
2. Come up with margins of victory and then play to a certain time limit.
3. If the game has a common opening, or the historical setting could be "fast forwarded" a little (look to Here I Stand as an example), do that.

I don't know the rules off hand so I can't say which method or how to apply it. But good luck!

Washington's War is a strategic level CDG and plays in about 90 minutes.

The Commands and Colors games play in about 60 to 90 minutes, assuming you are interested in grand-tactical level games. Lots of card play involved/

Maria has an introductory game as part of the rules that plays in half the time. You lose out on the politics phase, and only play on one of the two map segments. But the very enjoyable combat system and card play is the same as in the expert game.

You can try Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan and, since you are more in the gaming aspect as you say, Popular Front.
They are pretty different from Maria and between one another but they share point to point movement and nice card play. I love Maria myself and when I need something not so long, these are my games of choice.

Play games by email so that you aren't pressured into completing them in one sitting.

The designer released a set or rules called the Maria: Silesia Gambit for Maria, that introduces a game somewhere between the full game and the introductory game. Well worth checking out, and Maria's worth the time.

Hey, that sounds really good. 90 min play time. Wow. This sounds like exactly what I was looking for.

All these other suggestions are icing on the cake.
