What I'm really excited about is the RPG elements* in the game. The crew in B-17 always felt very sterile without any meaningful progression.

I hope you guys can share a few more details about the RPG part of the game before it ships.

* [Designer's Notes] ... Additionally, I felt it was important
to weave role-playing elements into the game, by presenting players with a
narrative to become emotionally vested in wanting to complete a successful
tour of duty. Hence the inclusion of the awards, promotions, and crew
quality rules that help bring such role-playing aspects to life.

Yes, I'd say the RPG element focuses largely on your persona as U-Boat Kommandant (which begins with you picking your U-Boat type, ID, and your captain name).

You start your career at a lower level, out of 5 possible officer ranks, and hope to earn promotions to ascend to the next level. Then there is also the Knight's Cross to be had. Along with this, the experience level of your crew can increase with successful missions (or vis versa, if they perform poorly). Add to this the element of specialized crew members become wounded or killed, and the fact injured specialists who need more time to recuperate may be lost since they won't make it back in time for your next patrol. Or you as Kommandant if you become seriously injured could lose your entire crew as you get assigned to a new U-Boat. Lots of stuff going on there...but the main fun part is the after action reports I envision folks will write-up that adds the decisions made during each patrol.

Fun (and addicting) stuff! Where I find most of the tension coming in is as the war progresses and patrols become even more risky in terms of ultimate survival (although granted, this is just through June '43 -- what the German U-Boat commanders went through in the latter stages of the war, well, we know that story when you look at the stats of U-Boats lost each year).

Very interesting John and yes I believe addictive in order to progress in your militar career and curriculum vitae.
On the other hand I supposse that if your U-Boat is hit and destroyed you have to start over again with a new Character....
