Hi everyone,

Exciting stuff – tickets for PAX Aus 2014 have just gone on sale. As many of you know, I am the TableTop manager for PAX Australia 2014. The TableTop area covers boardgames, RPGs, CCGs and miniatures games. This year, we have 50% more space and nearly 100% more tables – that's a factor of the layout, rather than a shoehorn. More gamers, more vendors – and one of my jobs over the next 12 months is to build our very own game library, as well as recruiting people to run panels and events.
So here's the million-dollar question: What games do you think our game library needs?

Remember, we're not JUST for die-hard boardgamers – PAX is an event for everyone who loves gaming. Lots of participants don't have hundreds of boardgames at home, so we need games that are a great gateway to the hobby as well.

And if you have other ideas about what we can do to make the TableTop area even better this year, I'd love to hear them.

This year it was a total mix, with enough games of each category to satisfy everyone, I expect next year will be the same.

I know it's not an answer to the question you asked, but I'm hoping for some more board game panels. Almost all of them were video game related rather than tabletop related.

Frank, it's not 50/50 but it's close enough. I don't care about genre, more about what people want to play. I can post the top 20 or so library check outs, if you are interested.

If there are some games that we REALLY need to have in the library, please post them here. Especially those that are relatively quick (under an hour?) to play.

And if you -or anyone else- would like to run an Event or tournament, or put together a panel proposal, please let me know.

Well, this year we mostly borrowed games. Our "collection" sits at around 130 titles and many are multiple copies that we sourced for tournaments & events.

So let's put it another way: if you were building a game library from scratch, what would you include?

(Alternatively, if there is interest, I can share our "owned" games list as well as my tentative wish list ...)

Definitely!

There's a process for panel submissions that goes for all of PAX. I'd love to have more boardgaming panels - the Indy games panel last year worked a treat, as did the "play the Indy games" event that followed.

I'd also love to see more integration of tabletop games into other "gaming" panels. So by all means propose tabletop panels, but think about broader panels too, that crossover between gaming genres.

And please let me know if I can help

I demand 70/30.

According to the PAXAus twitter account three days passes are "almost 50% gone".

Frank is that 70/30 by weight, box volume or straight numbers?

Alright, here are my thoughts;

Firstly, a question; who is going to use this library?
My Answer: All types of gamers. So the follow up is, who do I aim the library at? For me, I would prefer a focus on the new gamer, with some “classics” and some “New Hotness”.

A bit of a (self imposed) criteria;
If I am thinking of “gaming evangelism” (or games for the masses) then games need to be fun to play. They don’t necessarily have to be easy to learn as there will be game instructors there (?) but balancing that, they still can’t be too convoluted.
Then need to be also linked to other geek hobbies. – RPG’s, Miniatures etc.
There needs to be a mix between Euro and Ameritrash.

Citadels
The Resistance
Munchkin
Pathfinder the card game (not sure about this one)
High Command – if it’s available.
Setters of Catan
Mice and mystics
Smash Up
Dominion
Sentinels of the Multiverse (Not forgetting that GtG will be there!)
Love Letter
Flash Point Fire Rescue
Ticket to ride – with as many maps as possible. Or Relic Runners (I haven’t played this one so I don’t know how good it is.)
Carcassonne – South Seas
Legendary
Seasons
King of Tokyo
Stone Age
Galaxy Trucker
Guild Hall
Biblios
Goblins Drool Fairie's Rule

Listed in no particular order.

Another thought;

I know its probably impossible but going off how popular the big Jenga was last year an oversized version of a game would be cool.

Also, once the library starts to take shape it might be worth sending a list of the games out to the retailers that have bought store space so they can stock up on some of the games. Played a game you like, want to buy it, here it is!

3-day passes now 75% sold out. Wow.

If you *think* you might want to Enforce/volunteer, but haven't quite decided, my advice is to buy a ticket. You can always on-sell it. I don't want people who really want to be there to miss out.

What's a boardgame panel?

Panels are - um - talks, I guess. But with a group of panellists, who discuss a topic. Last year, there was a panel on writing game narratives (eg for RPGs) and one on indy game development in Australia. But there could be many, many more. Frank, you could propose a smackdown panel on boardgame genres if you wanted.

Re: What did not get played ?
What would really help is to know what did not get played, just as you gave a list of hot plays.

The cruel joke between Warren and me was over Monopoly which proved us to be both red faced in that providing a copy for the library found it out being played. Yes, people pay all that money to come to a convention with so much else on offer and choose to play Monopoly rather than other offerings.

The need is for diversity of choice rather than constraint by the geek fantasy list. It is not for us to dictate what people should play, they will decide that for themselves, we just need to make it on offer.

Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game
I think it has taken off with a tabletop hotness in the last 6 months that it needs to be included, maybe even with vendor support. It ticks the geek culture check boxes in so many ways that to omit it would be a shame.

Second Hand Stall
Second hand stall for tabletop, 20% of proceeds (commission) going to the PAX associated charitable organisation Child's Play. (We so need RCH Melbourne to be on the Child's Play list of hospitals).

Local Tabletop group Showcase

Giant games
Not just Jenga.

Game Demo Showcase
Assuming the technology is available, for projection onto a big screen, an elevated area (small stage like) with single table set for use in scheduled feature demos and tournament grand finals.

That's some great information right there, Melissa.

Based on that list, my suggestions would be:

Forbidden Desert - I've been enjoying this a whole lot more than Forbidden Island
Ladies and Gentlemen - The Penny Arcade guys just recently did a comic on this. Not sure if nerd memories will stretch that long (hah!), but might be nice to have.
Expansions for 7 Wonders, King of Tokyo and Sentinels of the Multiverse - seems obvious, judging by their popularity
Shadows over Camelot - The Card Game - I've actually been enjoying this more than actual Shadows, more because of the minimal set up time. Shadows always felt like an "event" game.
Love Letter - I bring a copy around with me regularly and have had great success with non-gamers
Mascarade - Another great bluffing game that has been a hit with non-gamers
Get Bit! - The detachable plastic figures usually sells this
The Metagame (Videogame Edition) - I've heard it's basically Apples to Apples with videogames. Should be a good crossover?
Augustus - Another hit with non-gamers
The Big Bang Theory Party Game - Apples to Apples for nerds part two. Actually enjoy the double-card category idea.
Bohnanza
Citadels
Discworld: Ankh Morpork - might get fans of the series
Dixit
Castle Ravenloft/Wrath of Ashardalon/Legend of Drizz't
Family Business
Flash Duel
Puzzle Strike - Puzzle Fighter in game form. Might catch some videogame fans.
Krosmaster Arena - Also mentioned on Penny Arcade a few times.
Glory to Rome
Innovation
Guildhall
Guillotine
Hanabi - It's on repeat play with my group. Still on the search for the perfect run...
Warmachine/Hordes: High Command - Might lure the minis crowd
Infiltration - Pretty simple push your luck game with a great cyberpunk theme
Isla Dorada - Colourful, silly names and a cute adventure theme
Koryo
Last Will
Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game - Might appeal to the comics fans
Libertalia
Revolution!
Rex: Final Days of an Empire - probably a bit complex for this convention crowd, but might appeal to the more serious gamers
RoboRally - maybe a giant version?
Saboteur
Wits & Wagers - an event would be fun!
Walk the Plank
Village
Vegas Showdown - We're right next to Crown Casino...
Trains - Dominion with a board
Tichu - May get people who like traditional card games
Tales of the Arabian Nights - Might be a bit long, but strong theme and could be an event game
Survive
Super Dungeon Explore - Has an old-school videogame feel which might appeal to that crowd.
String Railway - Great visual appeal. I played this at PAX this year and we had people stopping by to watch the game.
Smash Up + Expansions - theme would appeal to wide variety of geeks
Space Cadets/Space Cadets Dice Duel - would be a great event game

Plus whatever new hotness comes out in the span of this year!

I wholly endorse the idea for more giant games! Off the top of my head, cool giant games could be RoboRally, King of Tokyo, Zombie Dice, The Duke, Get Bit!, or Wits & Wagers.

In addition to panels, I think more board game events would be nice. Especially if some of the guests could be roped in. Maybe some pimped out exhibition games with some added spectacle. Kind of like an Analogue Omegathon round. Most of the Giant size game suggestions above could have special events.

How about a Board Game themed scavenger hunt? There could be a list of board game related things that you could take photos of and submit for a small prize (eg. a worker placement game, a red meeple, a 5-player game, a game with a pirate).

Also, more game demos would be cool, but that's pretty much up to the game companies. With Kickstarter just launching in Australia this week, I'm guessing by next year there would be a bunch of local game designers showcasing Kickstarter projects, similar to the Indie Board Games panel and demos this year which were great.

Space to do them and background sound could make them difficult to do.
