in some of the above photos players are using green and red x markers.what are these used for?

Some players use plastic tile spacers painted different colours in place of commonly used markers, such as DG or out of supply. The idea is to make the unit itself visible under the marker.

The relationship between specific coloured Xs and specific game markers would be whatever the particular players chose.

Typically for marking things on the map (VP hexes, ranges of aircraft, supply lines, whatever the player(s) want to mark).

We use a "Location" marker from ASL to mark where a unit we're moving started the movement phase from. Then we face it a specific way to show that it has moved. I like the idea of using those Xs so you can see the unit beneath, but I imagine it could get odd if you need to put the DG beneath a non-DG unit, as the DG unit would still be hidden.
