Ok, this is 100% personal opinion, so YMMV, but I am so done with zombies. And Cthulhu. I like kickstarter and even if I'm not backing much I do like to browse. And anymore nothing prompts me to move on like zombies. And Cthulhu. I will admit I am pretty "meh" on zombies (and Cthulhu) under the best of circumstances, and my ambivalence to zombie themed games is made all the deeper with the surplus of books/movies/TV in the genere. Which is not to say that the game in question might not be a great game. But zombies (or Cthulhu)? No thanks.

So, what themes, mechanisms or what-have-you are you tired of?

Action-drafting/worker-placement - I don't have a beef with the mechanic per se, but it seems lazy how it turns up so often in an uninteresting way. The blocking and placement-planning is too minor and too short-term to be more than sporadically engaging; it seems like a mechanic included by default more than anything else.

First person to X victory points is the winner. Thankfully, I haven't seen many of these lately. I don't mind "Player with the most victory points at game end is the winner" or even "all players with at least X victory points at game end is the winner" or even "first person to X victory points and LEADING the next highest player by Y victory points is the winner".

Just about anything related to Lovecraft. Especially if it involves a cutesy rendering of Cthulhu. I'm burned out on Cthulhu in general, but cuddly chibi plushie Cthulhu? Please no more.

Came here to say this, found you'd already covered it. I was over zombies about 4 years ago. The persistence with which they've saturated the market is... yes... zombie-like.

I don't mind Cthulhu per se. But, yeah, it's overdone, too.

I try not to have a problem with any general trope, setting, theme, premise, mechanic, what-have-you as long as it is a well-done game. I can get pretty sick of zombies as well, but if I had taken an attitude of "I won't even look at it" I would have missed the excellent Dawn of the Zeds.

However, there are exceptions. I detest super-hero stuff and won't buy them no matter how well they are done. Same with manga/anime and specific I.P.'s I don't like such as Star Trek.

I agree with the zombies. It seems like once Zombicide made a huge amount of cash with its Kickstarter, everyone wanted jump on that cash cow.

Fantasy is another one that is overdone, but it's one of my favorite themes, so I don't mind.

Deckbuilding Games, sick of them. Most have long set up times, and offer very little choices that are not obvious.

Lord of the Rings
Cthulhu
I actually haven't played to many zombie games, but I am sick of hearing about them.
Train games

With that said, I don't hate any of those to turn a game down outright. Infact I have 2 zombie games and 1 deckbuilder on my wishlist.

Zombies... definitely... there are some good ones out there, but having to wade through the dross often means the good ones get pushed aside (or overlooked) too.

It hasn't happened yet, but I'm concerned that the next theme to be sucked drier than an exsanguinated vampire victim will be steampunk (and maybe dystopian sci-fi). Hopefully we can get some good games out of it before the inevitable over-saturation.

I'm working on a new game of Zombie Cthulhu, where you have to fight off the zombie-cultists first and if enough of them get on the board, Zombie Cthulhu comes out and slaughters everyone.

So you're saying that wouldn't be interesting..?

The terminology "Victory Points" itself. Putting the word "Victory" in front is needlessly redundant, totally unnecessary, superfluous and repetitive for no good reason, just like this sentence .

In any other sport and many traditional board and card games, people just keep score by totaling points. Sometimes the scoring of points is called a Run or a Goal or a Touchdown or a Strike, or a Bullseye or a Trick or other terminology, but those still just score Points. Nowhere outside of the recent euro-inspired designer game has anyone been so insecure as to decide their game needs to have Victory Runs nor Victory Goals nor Victory Touchdowns, nor Victory Strikes nor Victory Bullseyes not the taking of Victory Tricks to score Victory Points. And if someone playing any of those other games or sports were to start using that sort of terminology, they would be roundly mocked if not outright slapped for being such a pretentious ass.

If it has a bunch of miniatures, you're sure to make megabucks on Kickstarter.
