Do I understand the card play correctly. In a two player game you can turn the top card onto the table, then as long a each player only discards a card, this play can be repeated until someone decides to play one from his hand and one from the table, at which point the other player has to then play his cards too!
The last player to have played the cards then has first player marker.

Players can alternate discarding cards to the Courtyard for a while.

Once a player is down to one card, his only choice then is whether to turn up a card from the Draw pile. After that, he must take one of the cards from the Courtyard and place it in front of him, along with the card left in his hand.

After one player has placed his two cards, the other player still has the option to turn up a card from the Draw pile. After that, he must place one card from the Courtyard and one from his hand (which probably has only one card by then).

Just to detail that further, every action you take you may add a card from the deck to the table. Each player has 4 cards maximum, so if the players want, they can add 8 cards + the 8 they're holding, to give themselves 16 to choose from. Or, they can never add any for 8 total. Or any number in between.

So all this is possible (and common):
Player 1 turns over a card from the deck (1 card in common pile).
Player 1 discards a card (now 2).

Player 2 turns over a card from the deck. (now 3)
Player 2 discards a card (4).

Player 1 turns over a card from the deck. (5)
Player 1 discards a card (6).

Player 2 chooses to discard only (7)

Player 1 turns over a card from the deck. (8)
Player 1 discards a card (9).

Player 2 keeps a card, takes a table card.
He places his remaining card in the pile. (still 9)

Player 1 turns over a card from the deck. (10)
Player 1 keeps a card, takes a table card.
