Saw someone playing Assyrian Wars lately, made me think of looking for another ancients strategic wargame.

Found this, which would seem to fit the bill.

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/38923/the-god-kings-warfa...

Then found this on the p500 list at gmt;

http://www.gmtgames.com/p-429-genesis.aspx

Any thoughts on either?

Do you want 2 player or multiplayer?

For 2 player, you have games like Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage or Hellenes: Campaigns of the Peloponnesian War for Card Driven games, or block games like Julius Caesar or Athens & Sparta. For multiplayer, you have games such as Sword of Rome or even History of the Roman Empire.

Primarily thinking ancient middle east, pre greece/rome. Multiplayer. Specefically looking at the 3 games quoted, looking for feedback on them comparitively, or some other game unknown to me for that period.

Genesis uses the same system as Pax Romana, which is a very good, but very long game. It's best played via email/online. I wouldn't expect Genesis to be published anytime soon - it's at least a year or two out.

If you want something simpler, and playable in a reasonable amount of time (less than 8 hours), you could do worse than to track down a copy of Chariot Lords.

By the way, did the people playing Assyrian Wars seem to be enjoying themselves? It's hard to get much information about that game.

Not actually a wargame, it's an area control game where you sometimes force control via battles.

It is however a superb game!

Not neccesserily a war game either, but After the Flood could be worth looking into. It's three player only though.

Maybe not quite ancient enough but Successors is an excellent multiplayer game.
