I've had a great week answering y'all's question. As my spell as GotW fizzles out, let me introduce you to the next Geek of the Week before I run out of juice:

As I mentioned last week, I think game comments are one of the most useful features of the week so it should come as no surprise that Ben is also an avid commenter. I don't remember when our paths crossed first but it was probably on the old Stingray GCL. Ben has been one of my first geekbuddies on the site, and when looking at new games his voice is never one to lightly dismiss. Even though he's terribly wrong about some games, getting to see things from his point of view is always entertaining, be it in one of his comments or his opinionated reviews. I've been hoping to play a game with Ben at Essen this year but unfortunately our schedules didn't match. Good for him since I wouldn't have been able to choose him as GotW otherwise.

I'll let him take over now:

I owe a great debt to Jens for thinking of me as a Geek of Week candidate. Thank you so much. I've wanted to be a GotW just about since I joined BGG, which really hasn't been all that long now.

I consider myself relatively new to the board gaming hobby. While I played some mainstream games as a child, I didn't knowingly and consciously begin playing Eurogames until sometime 2009. Prior to that, I was a long-time (and rather good) Poker player, and I have dabbled in other nerdery - RPGs, video games, comic books - in drips an drabs over the years.

I tend to be recognized on BGG for having relatively low ratings. Last year at BGG.Con one person even stopped me to say, "Hey, you're that guy who hates everything!" I think the Ben Grimm avatar doesn't help. I actually love games and gaming, but I tend to have some pretty idiosyncratic preferences. For example, I strongly prefer board games to card games, and I generally dislike computer versions of board games (including iOS games). As a general rule, I dislike dice (but not luck) and trading/negotiation. I'm also not good at min/max calculations - I tend to be a player who "wings it," and enjoy games where those strategies can be successful.

Outside of games, I have a background in philosophy and law, so I like to dissect the hobby analytically. BGG has provided me with an amazing forum for just that - not only in individual game forums, but also as a member of a Game Chat League, which offers me my own little corner of the internet to be a dour, detached critic. I try to give back to the BGG community by contributing to gaming discussions, by commenting on games, and by writing reviews. My "What You're Missing" series of reviews, though infrequent, have been a great place for me to tout the merits of underlooked games that I love.

Over the last couple of years, my engagement with the board gaming hobby has grown. I have a couple of great game groups in Washington, DC; I was invited to contribute to the Opinionated Gamers blog; and I made my first-ever trip to Essen this October for SPIEL! I look forward to wherever this journey continues to take me.

Ben, here are a few questions to get you warmed up:

d10-1 What was your most precious culinary delight in Essen?
d10-2 Any predictions how many 2013 releases will be worth keeping in the long run?
d10-3 If you could wish for a design team to design your dream game, who'd be on that team?
d10-4 What am I missing?

Poll: Two truths and a lie

Ben,

I don't think we've ever interacted on this site, but you should know that it's always a pleasure to see your avatar in a thread. It means I'm likely to read something quite intelligent and very likely a point of view on a game that will create interest (I will likely never forget how you pointed out that two-player Parade is a completely different game than more than two player Parade)

You'd apparently be quite a hit here in Canada, because I agree with this 100%!
