Lets talk about who you think was the best and worst president and feel free to give your reasoning.

Best: Calvin Coolidge

Silent Cal accomplished a feat that seems unbelievable today, federal spending didn't increase. he cut taxes 6 times. regulations near 0%. His name is synonymous with the fast-growing 1920s economy "Coolidge Prosperity,". Coolidge stood defiantly as an anti-Progressive between two activist eras of Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and then FDR's.

Worst: Lincoln

For the obvious reasons.

Um, you do know that Coolidge was president in 1929, right? Are you aware of any other financial developments that year?

EDIT:
To answer the OP:

It's going to sound like a troll but I think Bush II was the worst because he pushed through the Patriot Act and did irreparable damage to the US Constitution and individual rights in the US. Frankly, Obama is IMO the next worse for extending the damage but without Bush II there'd have been nothing for Obama to have built on.

As for best, I'm tempted to claim William Henry Harrison but that would be a cynical answer. Truman's projects if they'd gone through would likely have avoided a lot of the US's current problems. Still, I think James K. Polk takes the prize.

Hard to say, as most presidants have good and bad points.

Worst: Kennedy (potentially, he never got a chance to really dull)
Best: Possibly Clinton (he was able to (almost) balance the deficit), but to be honest there is not a lot in it with the 'best of the worst'.

"Best" is difficult because there are multiple criteria upon which one can denote achievement. FDR, Teddy, Eisenhower, Jefferson and Lincoln all have good arguments for "best" but it really depends on what criteria matter the most to you. I generally go with FDR or Lincoln, though.

"Worst" is easier: it's either Pierce or Buchanan, depending on who you assign primary blame to for allowing the country to get to the point where civil war was inevitable. I tend to give it to Pierce, who made reconciliation a near-impossible task for Buchanan (although Buchanan barely tried).

Best: Dwight Eisenhower (Runner up: Teddy Roosevelt)

Eisenhower had the tough task of keeping economic prosperity going in an era where the war machine was slowing down rather than churning full steam ahead. Had to negotiate the global political minefield that was left after WW2 as well. Managed to pay for social programs but made sure they were funded rather than scribbling a blank check.

Worst: Warren G Harding (Runner up: Woodrow Wilson)

Harding and his White House made Dubya's cronies look like amateurs. They invented the runaway support staff and did all sorts of crooked schtuff without Harding having a clue just how much of his influence was for sale.

No, no. Here's how this will play out.

Best: Someone Jeremy will hate because I picked him.

Worst: Someone Jeremy will love because I picked him.

Commentary: snide condescension from Jeremy about how wrong I am because I understand nothing while getting just about every statement of fact wrong.

What do I win?

Best: Ulysses S. Grant

Worst: Ulysses S. Grant

A great man with good deeds as president, yet rocked by a corrupt administration during a moral decline in our history. A complex two-terms.

No , wrong.

George was easily the 2nd best President in our history.

He beats the greatest military of his time with a smaller less armed force. He enables the people in Americas to be free. Is offered the chance to become his own king and has the support of his military but declines. He is elected for a 2nd term and could have stayed until he died, but does what few people in power do, he gives it back to the people. That in itself would be enough to put him in the top 3.

Or were you attempting to be humorous ?

Hard to choose just one in both categories, but

Best: Washington. Established the precedent. The importance of this shouldn't be underestimated. The country could have gone so many ways. Washington put it on a good track.

I know Lincoln is also highly regarded. I'm no prez scholar, but certainly holding the country together and doing the right thing by freeing slaves has to count for a lot.

FDR also held the country together. The Depression was making people desperate. We could have had a major revolution, not for the better, if FDR hadn't given people hope.

Worst (in the last 75 years least): Nixon. For seriously damaging Americans' trust in the office. America has never been the same after Watergate.

Bush II was certainly the worst since Nixon - disastrous wars, bungled so many things, drove so many other things into the ditch.

My opinion of Obama started very high and has declined ever since. History will tell...

There could well other be other equally terrible presidents. My 19th century American history is a little fuzzy...

PBS "American Experience"
http://video.pbs.org/program/american-experience/ has a great series on American presidents, which I highly recommend

Yeah, Grant was more responsible for that than Lincoln.

Only by federalists or people who completed a high school analysis of his presidency. People who prefer the constitution and states rights generally despise Lincoln.

tesuji wrote:

He used the US army to invaded the South without the consent of Congress (as required by the Constitution) clearly a war crime.
Holding the country together cost the lives of 620,000 Americans. that includes the murder of some 50,000 innocent Southern civilians.

If freeing people from oppression is a qualifier to be the GOAT, then GWB should be up there as he freed people in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Slaves were also freed in Europe without the loss of lives that America suffered.

I do agree that the Mythical Lincoln we learn about in high school is a much better president then the real Lincoln.

As remembered by someone who completed a high school analysis of his presidency. Benjamin Franklin and his efforts in France and consequently their efforts supplying Washington and keeping the British Navy busy were as, if not more, instrumental in defeating that military.
