I would dearly love to play the 'celts' as a player controlled force in an ancients wargame. I know of Barbarian, Kingdom & Empire and Sword of Rome approach this to some degree but not in the way I want (although I also realize treating the various tribes as a single entity has pitfalls of its own).

I do so wish that the forthcoming reprint of Pax Romana would allow this, but alas, it looks like no major changes there. It would make a p500 comittment from me automatic if it did!

Pocket Battles: Celts vs Romans features them, though my guess is that game isn't meaty enough for what you're after. It's a quick fun little game, but not that involved.

Boudicca: The Warrior Queen, a reimplementation of Druid: Boudicca's Rebellion, 61 A.D. comes to mind. Haven't played it, but have heard good things about it.

Dunno about the remake, but the original was a pretty good game.

More on the Pax Romanum scale, try Sword of Rome.
The celts are fun to play in this one.

Hmm...I see you nixed that already. Odd. Not sure what you want then.

Other good choices:

SPQR
Imperium Romanum II

Never play block wargames with a dentist, they have those little mirrors to peek behind the block.

A Brief History of the World and the older Avalon Hill's History of the World have them but you would have to get dealt the civilization card.

In addition to the suggestions above, there are also lots of Celtic hordes in Caesar: Conquest of Gaul.

As well as in Caesar: Epic Battle of Alesia, and there may be (my memory is fuzzy) a Celtic scenario in Caesar's Legions.

If not, Barbarians certainly does. I can't vouch for how
good it is, but it's the same system.

7 Ages has Celts but no guarantee that a player would actually have the Celts in play.

They can also be found in Carthage: The First Punic War, where they serve as mercenaries for the Carthaginians.

Caesar in Gallia

Includes an Invasion of (Celtic) Britain scenario.

On the Celtic Mythology side there is also Albion: Land of Faerie - Sidhe vs Fomorians, with some pesky Mundanes and Gnomes thrown in.

Part of the problem is that the Celts were never a unified polity at any point, so it's hard to have a "Celt" side in any wargame. Britannia may go further than any other wargame, but even there the are more than one Celtic peoples involved.

Which makes it that much more realistic.

True, but creates difficulties for OP's original request.

De Bellis Antiquitatus has Celts, as do any number of other ancients miniatures games - Basic Impetus (which is free), Hail Caesar, Warmaster Ancients, etc.

But they are a real pain to paint!

...and from ATO:

Boudicca: The Warrior Queen

and (at least partly Irish on one side, and intimately linked with the Irish Troubles of the next few centuries):

Lilliburlero: The Battle of the Boyne, July 1690

I have both, but have played neither. I read the rules to the 2nd -- looks interesting, but ... so many games, so little time!
