I am not a big fan of Roman popery, but this guy has been the best pope that I can recall. Snowden would also have been a good choice.

And you guys can remember......... How many Popes, exactly?

Let's see... John, John, Paul, John Paul, George and, of course Ringo. Oh, and that one guy Benedict who kind of came and went unnoticed because Jesus H Obama was touring the world apologizing for America about the same time Benny was apologizing for pedophilia. Anyway, I have all the CD's.

*edit*

I almost forgot.... there's Pope Charlie as well.

Should have been Snowden.

Snowden is a two bit criminal. Please explain how he enlightened anyone on the planet who was not paying attention during the GWB administration.

A bonafide criminal against the United States is your choice? I'm okay with that providing you join your hero in his current residence.

49xsomething had his money on Assad.

You guys make the same mistake many do: that MotY is about popularity. It can also be about infamy (Hitler won one, didn't he?). So whether you respect or loathe him, Snowden's a worthy candidate. As is Assad.

I liked the Pope for the win. I had no money on it, and I am not Catholic. I simply like his message for the betterment of all humans, no matter those standing in the way.

I think you are the one making the mistake. Yeah, the Time thing can be about infamy as well, but is that the kind of thing you are rooting for?

Well is it, Tommy?

None, not even the guy who won. But I have the built-in excuse of Mormon Exceptionalism. I don't have to pay attention to anything.

Either would have been a good choice, but

1. There is the argument that Snowden revealed all that information and then basically nothing happened, and that a Person of the Year should create change of some kind and Pope Francis is a better candidate by that metric, and also;
2. Pope Francis on the cover of your newsmagazine probably sells more copies.

I'm sure there would be people who would contest that despite all his rhetoric to the contrary, nothing will change with Pope Francis either.

I would argue that the the Time's Person of the Year should actually meet their criteria of profiles a person, group, idea or object that "for better or for worse, ...has done the most to influence the events of the year."
