Are the gold, silver, and bronze bonus awarded to the person with the most (2nd most, 3rd most) points for that round or the most points overall?

The cards are awarded at the end of each round based on points scored that round.

To be absolutely clear: the only "points" that matter are those on the cards. What you evaluate each round is the value of the buildings. The building with the greatest value gets Gold, and so on. Those values do not carry over from round to round, nor are they ever worth victory points.

You final score is simply the sum of the points on the cards you claimed during the three rounds. A high score would be somewhere around the 10-12 points mark.

We absolutely played this wrong! We kept a cumulative score based on all our dice scores from every round. Our final score was like 84 or something. That makes more sense...

I assume the whole purpose of the score board is to see how many points you've scored that round, right? But the scoreboard, in and of itself, means nothing at the end of the game then, right?

That's right. The score you track on the board is simply the value of the building (determined by the materials you used and whether you followed the Blueprint or not). When you start a new round, you reset the scoreboard to zero.

What matters when the game ends are the cards you collected - those, and nothing else, bring you victory points.
