Last game, I (not involved in the combat directly) played a Missile to stop Player A who was attacking the Radar Specialist Player B (we forgot he was the radar specialist at the time). I assume this was illegal, but a clarification would be appreciated.

I.e. Can a 3rd party play a missile to help the Radar Specialist?

No, never. The text of Radar Specialist is "Missiles cannot be used in any combat you are involved in during this game." It doesn't care about whose missiles they are, or which combatant they help.

There's one other spot where this restriction potentially comes into play:

In my opinion, the EMP missile power can't be triggered until the attacker has committed to a particular combat situation, and so can't be used when Radar Specialist is involved.

That said, I don't think I've seen a formal ruling on this.

Does this mean that a player with Radar Specialist can only use their missiles to help 3rd parties then? This seems like a pretty awful "bonus" given that all the players now have at least one missile.

Radar specialist tends to get used by whoever has the least missiles. Also, they can use missiles for their brown power, if they have one.

Radar specialist is a double edged sword. You can't help yourself, but you can use it to keep fights between opponents even as possible (therefore weak as possible).

This works paticularily well with a faction with a great missile power.Blocking another player from drawing a 4+ coin resource card or from using a continent bonus does much more damage than guarenteeing one killed troop in a combat roll.
