So I have caught myself lately playing with all the little bits in a game while I'am playing. Does anyone else do this? It was a fail lase night becuase I was messing with the Francis Drake barrels and of course a few fell off the table. So I was thinking about carrying some poker chips so I could shuffle them during the downtime. Do you think that is a good idea or will it be distracting for the other players?

Re: Playing/Fiddling/Shuffling with bits of game while thiking or someone's else's turn
Well, it won't be well received in games that use poker chips for money.

There are much worse things you could be doing than messing with bits..

I was playing a fairly long game once and one guy was playing other board games on his iphone..When we got to his turn he'd give an "Ok what happened"

I am guilty of this on pretty much every occasion.

In the long run it's annoying. Buy yourself some gum to schew on.

You could just ask if they mind you do it. I see it a number of times at my gatherings, and I take myself in doing it, too. Fiddling with the game bits in downtimes and while thinking might be helpful for some people. Of course, as long as it doesn`t mess up an order in components or some go missing in the process....

Any game with more than 5 minutes of downtime between turns invites fiddling, chatting or snacking. I typically sort my cards or roll dice. Chewing gum or humming is more annoying than that.

If I had to sit there quiet as a stone while someone with AP agonized over playing a card I'd probably kill myself (or everyone else at the table).

Yeah, it`s a normal drive to be active, even when you are sitting. I too, would think chewing gum would be very annoying. Humming, I think I do that from time to time, but I am more on sorting my cards, fiddling components, looking out in the room or talking to someone. Playing with the iPhone is just plain rude. If you have to take a phone call or text someone, you could just excuse yourself, but playing games on it or doing other stuff like that is not suited while you partisipate in a tabletop game. Keep on fiddling, people!!

Yeah, please don't do this. Chewing gum and talking to people is not only annoying it makes you look like a cow chewing on it's cud.

Humming would totally freak me out. That would be worse than chewing gum. angry

I find it weird that people feel the need to be "active" during games. I don't think that is "normal" at all. It would be like wanting to be "active" while sitting, or lying down, and reading a book... But if you do, why not get up and walk around the room next door?

Well, Derek, for some people it`s normal to be active while sitting, lying down or reading a book. It`s better that it happens at the table rather than if one just gets up and leave the game to have a walk. Subtle activity is not a big problem. We all move a bit during a game, like slide on the chair, maybe shifting our legs, arranging and rearranging our cards, that stuff. Humming is maybe not the best for all, though I have experienced everyone at the table break out singing "She`s got a ticket to Ride", song by the Beatles at the table. Can you guess what game we played?

Fiddling with bits is far superior to repeatedly poking the guy next to you.

...unless that guy happens to be the Pilsbury Dough Boy... in which case he should be poked because it's awesome.

You know what my days used to be like? I just tested. Nobody murdered me. Or put me in a potato. Or fed me to birds. I had a pretty good life. And then you showed up. You dangerous, mute lunatic. So you know what? You win. Just go. Don't come back.

I bring along a small stack of the original wooden Agricola disks to practice shuffling like casino chips. It is quite difficult.

I have a habit of shaking dice under the table while I'm waiting and I don't notice I'm doing it until someone from across the table busts out laughing because it looks like I'm doing something inappropriate.

Then I try to not do it but then I do it again 10 minutes later.

Some habits are hard to get rid of, Nicholas....the shaking of the dice, not the other bit...................whistle

I, of course would have had that problem, but I guess it would seem just as suspicios if a female gamer did it. Have you tried shaking your dice to the side of the table?
