(thumbsups appreciated!)

The Happy New Year edition.

We are at: www.kanataboardgamers.ca

What games did you get for Christmas? Bring 'em and let's play!

There will be a meeting of the Kanata Board Gamers this Thursday, 2 January 2014. The start time for the session is 6 PM till approximately 11pm.

The place is: Kanata Community Christian Reformed Church
Detailed directions follow, but it is quite close to the Hazeldean Public Library.

Also, send me a geekmail if you want to let me know about anything - from suggestions for raising club attendance, club purchase suggestions, or just telling me whether you can make the meeting.

Feel free to use this forum thread to discuss what to play!

You may bring food & drink (be neat!). We can rearrange the tables & chairs provided we return everything an keep things tidy.

Our meetings are posted on meetup; check out http://meetup.gamesforall.ca/

Kanata Community Christian Reformed Church (KCCRC) is 46 Castlefrank Rd (directions follow). There is parking outside. Go straight through the front doors and you can't miss us!

$2.50 will be collected from each person. The first $30 collected is donated to our gracious venue. Any left over will go into a boardgame library fund. The war chest stands at $596.02. Check out the library (BGG user: KanataBoardGamers). Members can borrow from the library any time. Borrow it one session, bring it back for the next!

Visitors are always welcome. Come on in and check us out! There is no obligation, but if you decide to become a member it only costs $7.50 and entitles you to 10% discount cards at select local games stores.

Note if you want the discount cards (for Fandom II, Mrs. Tiggy Winkles, and Comic Book Shoppe), let me know & I'll have them made up. 100% of the $7.50 fee goes to Can Games 2014 to support kids games and the cards are good for 1 calendar year from the month you get them. You have donated $22.50 so far.

Please add to this thread with your suggestions of what to play.

Hope to see you then!

Hope to be there again this week. I wouldn't mind another game of Terra Mystica if anyone is up for it, otherwise, I'm down for anything.

I will be there.
Got TtR: Nederland for X-mas. Love to play it.
Will also bring Bang! The dice game, is considered better than the card game, a Dominion set and King of Tokyo.

All 3 are relatively short games. Will also bring Village with expansion.

I should be there tomorrow. I'd be up for joining a game of Terra Mystica, as I also picked up a copy as part of my Christmas loot.

Flu hit my wife and I like a bag of hammers so I would rather not infect the rest of y'all. It sucks, I got my flu shot too.

Wow what a great turn out! 19.

It featured the return of a couple of long time absent gamers, plus the introduction of two new ones.

My session consisted of two games: Lords of Waterdeep, and Terra Mystica.

Lowd was a Christmas present for Lachlan. Also playing were David O, Steve S and Al. I explained the rules as only Al had played before but it had been a while. We were underway and at one point Lachlan points out he doesn't think he can win. This while being in first place but after receiving a mandatory quest. Naturally the other plays worked hard to oblige him . But it was newbie David's masterful accumulation of buildings that allowed him to pull far into the lead. Well played, sir!

Terra Mystica was another rules explanation fest. Lachlan explained to Steve S and I explained to David. Al brought the game and set it up. Not being a master of this game but realising initial placement is critical, I managed to place near two other players, Lachlan and David. Altho' One area had good expansion and the other was limited. For unknown reasons I concentrated on the limited area. Not too successfully... Steve S and Al seemed to be fairly isolated and paid for it with slower development. David turned his game into a settlement building machine. He ended up with largest settlement. I think another key to the game might be to keep a few workers for income. Despite this Lachlan one turn converted most settlements to trading houses to take advantage of the turn bonus. His strategy was most successful. He ended up taking advantage of turn bonuses frequently and pulled into an unstoppable lead. He never once complained that he was losing so maybe some lessons learned here, hmm?

There was so much going on yesterday that I'd love to hear what happened at the other tables. Do tell!
