It's once again time for the Avalon Hill Cup. This will be the sixth annual polling contest that I have held which pits the games published by the original Avalon Hill Game Company (including those previously or subsequently published by another company).

Unlike most polling contests, I have structured this event quite differently. Modeled after the English Football Association Cup (The FA Cup), games are first seeded (by BGG's ranking as of 31 December, 2013), then sorted by rank into "leagues". These leagues are staggered into the tournament, with some games receiving byes until deep into the tournament. Each round, games are RANDOMLY DRAWN to create unpredictable matchups. Top games may meet sooner than they may otherwise meet in a bracketed tournament, and lesser games have the opportunity to become "Giant Killers," a lower ranked game defeating a much higher ranked title (generally, one of the two top leagues of teams in the FA Cup). The voting results will be converted into a football/soccer-style score, including tie scores which will result in replays in later rounds where voting is close.

Another unique tradition to the AH Cup, I've taken the current English League and Nonleague tables to associate an English football club with every game. This is one of the most popular elements of this tournament, as fans of specific games root on various clubs, and football supporters root on an assortment of AH games!

For the fourth year of AH Cup competition, I will be including the games of Victory Games, for a total field of 302 games. I will rank the games based on 1) Ranking, 2) Geek Rating, then 3) Average Rating to determine initial seeds.

As in last year's tournament, I will dispense with replays during Qualifying Rounds. Once the proper rounds begin, replay rounds will begin.

Please subscribe to this thread to keep track of the pairings, discuss the matchups, find links to each round, and to root on your favorite games and/or clubs.

How do you pick a side with any other competition? Go with your heart, your head, or both.

Per the post above, the First Qualifying Round will begin in 2 weeks. That is when people will do the actual voting.

Q1 pairings will be determined in 7-10 days.

So, JL, what did you decide on the 'retirement' of past repeat champions? I see the vote was indicating a slight majority for allowing champions to continue to be eligible. I'm torn on the matter, but I do think that it might shake things up a bit (for the better) to retire champs after some number of wins, to give the other games a chance. Maybe the champs could be retired to a "Hall of Champions" with their own geeklist, a hallowed place for only the best of the best!

I believe the majority favored retirement (roughly 60/40), but the "retirement" vote was then split into two camps: five years consecutive and any five years. Perhaps go with retirement, and have a run-off between the two five-year options?

So, JL, what did you decide on the 'retirement' of past repeat champions? I see the vote was indicating a slight majority for allowing champions to continue to be eligible. I'm torn on the matter, but I do think that it might shake things up a bit (for the better) to retire champs after some number of wins, to give the other games a chance. Maybe the champs could be retired to a "Hall of Champions" with their own geeklist, a hallowed place for only the best of the best!

Civilization hasn't been as much of a runaway winner with each successive year, so there does seem to be some movement away from it. But until there's an overwhelming drive to retire games (65% or greater), I'm inclined to keep them in the competition.

Besides, who would want to deny any game the glory of finally taking down the last undefeated giant?

You can lobby for them now. But the Geeklist with the polls where the actual voting takes place will be opened next weekend. I will provide a link to the Geeklist here when it is ready.

Aegean Strike/Lewes is the only one that jumps out at me due to former Football Manger games, so I'll root for them this round.

And I'm going back to my standard rule on voting, when in doubt vote against the WWII game to maintain diversity in the field.

Re: The 2014 Avalon Hill Cup Subscription and Discussion Thread
I just realized how little I miss Avalon Hill.

Heresy, I realize. And very disloyal to a company that gave me immense pleasure in the 70's, but really, there's very little on that list I'd bother to pick up at a garage sale these days...

(Will there be other lists? Leagues? Divisions? I'm comparing this list to my shelves and realizing that many of the AH games I do retain and enjoy are not listed, which might partially explain my reaction)
