Hello all!

Just cracked open the box today and am enjoying my first patrol, I've had a single ship and one escort encounter. My question is can I target the escort as well? and not count it as tonnage if sunk? Thanks in advance to any answers you might have!

Happy New Year to you all!!!!

All the best,

Chris.

You can shoot down aircraft that attack you after you fail a detection roll against them. but there's nothing you can do against escorts despite the Hollywood ending of U-571...

Although you can't in this game, nothing stopped you from trying it in the Silent Hunter series.

Once you try it a few times; you stop.

Escorts are simply too fast and agile to be reasonable targets. Most targeting solutions are based on current course and speed. That is simply the reason why the closer you are the better. Escorts are much faster that the ships they escort, and use that extra speed to constantly move to and fro to each side of the convoy, or even to the front and rear.

In this way, their speed allows their detection equipment to cover a much larger area than would be possible if they simply matched the course and speed of the escorted ships and remained in a constant relative position.

That said, you could hit one, but it would be a very lucky event. Not worth the waste of torpedoes or the elevated possibility of detection.

As mentioned, it rarely happened historically. However, the next game in the series, Silent Victory, will allow you to attack the escorts. Silent Victory takes place in the Pacific, where you are commander of a US sub attacking Japanese shipping, escorts, and even Japanese subs.

Thanks for the responses. Totally missed the historical note regarding the escorts. All very logical points! Cheers Chaps! I won't tell the Cmdr about the amount or torpedoes trying to get the escorts!!blush and i'll erase the one escort I did sink! whistle lets just forget this ever happened!!!

This is a fantastic game and I'll definitely get the pacific game!!!

Thanks again.

All the best,

Chris

How do you sink a ship that has no hit points?

With torpedoes, silly.

Was that a trick question?

There was one sub that had success doing so...just one that I know of...

To my knowledge, the japanese did not have the detection systems that the allies had, nor the asw focus. Their focus on submarine use was in combat or wacky specialist missions rather than economic warfare so that might have tainted thier policy view as well.

Cheers!
