In the recent thread How do you decide what wargame hits the table?, I posted that my choice of game was governed by the historical era I was interested in at the moment.

It occurred to me that since this was my primary consideration in playing, it would be logical to organize my collection chronologically. In the past, I've kept my games on the shelf in a pretty haphazard manner. But I've spent the last couple of days reorganizing my game collection (and books) by period. This has made it easy for me to do a quick tally of my games by period:

Ancient: 29

Dark Ages/Medieval: 10

Renaissance/30 Years War/ECW: 19

18th Century/AWI: 20

Napoleonic: 16

ACW: 24

Other 19th Century: 13

Russo-Japanese War and WWI: 42

WWII: 56

Post-WWII/Cold War: 16

Total: 245

I know I've missed several - magazine games packed with boxed games, etc. - but this provides a fairly accurate picture of my collection.

I was a bit surprised by the preponderance of WWII titles, since I'm more interested in both the Renaissance and WWI periods, and by the scarcity of titles from the Dark Ages/Medieval period, in which I also have a strong interest.

Has anyone else taken the time to count their games by historical era? Are you eclectic, or focused? Does your collection closely follow your historical interests? Any unusual gaps or omissions?

I have only recently started wargaming, and have opted to get games pertaining to WWII since I'm really into global wars and WWII is my war of interest.

I'll probably venture into WWI-related strategic games overtime, though my level of interest isn't as high in this subject.

Hmm...this information is sorta contained on BGG. Would make it a lot easier
than going through the collection manually, even if not accurate.

Though, my stuff is all sorted by era anyhow....

I guess a rough estimate wasn't that hard:

Ancients: 57
Medieval: 24
Renaissance: 15
17th Century: 20
Age of Reason: 19
Revolutionary: 14
Napoleonic: 44
Colonial: 17
ACW: 50
WWI: 20
Interwar 8
WWII: 85
Cold War: 18
Hypothetical: 24
SF 58
Fantasy: 30

With a fairly broad interpretation of what should be included
(i.e. all wimpgames were). It would be too hard to try and slice
the collection otherwise.

Wow this is revealing. My interests by time period are very narrow (hrmmpf), I mean focused:

Dark Ages/Medieval: 0

Renaissance/30 Years War/ECW: 0

18th Century/AWI: 0

Napoleonic: 0

Crimean War: 3

ACW: 3

Franco Prussian War: 3

Russo-Japanese War and WWI: 48

WWII: 18

Great idea! I have sorted my games informally before, and thought my collection leaned heavily toward WW2 games. I also had it in my head that I had a large percentage of Naval games. Your post made me sit down and do an official count (what else should I be doing on New Year's Day? )

I used the same categories as you, but have listed the results by percentage of wargames in my collection. There are about 150 wargames on my shelves. The results:

Ancient: 2.6%
Dark Ages/Medieval: 3.3%
Renaissance/30 Years War/ECW: 0.6%
18th Century/AWI: 4.6%
Napoleonic: 6.6%
ACW: 8.6%
Other 19th Century: 1.3%
Russo-Japanese War and WWI: 4%
WWII: 58%
Post-WWII/Cold War: 7.3%

Well, as a historian, I found this a bit surprising -- 6 years of history comprise almost 60% of my collection! Needless to say, I have some areas that are seriously underrepresented.

I found it interesting that my game collection doesn't match the percentages reflected in the books on my bookshelves. I have a keen interest in ancient Greek history, with the vast majority of an entire bookcase containing books on the subject. Yet I have on 2 games on this topic!

I found that 24.6% of my games were Naval wargames, which seems about right based on my expectation.

Thanks for bringing up the topic -- it was a good exercise to satisfy my wargamer OCD. If I start spending money this year to better balance my collection across these historical periods, you can expect a nasty letter from my wife!

It's what the hobby provides. Not just the publication, but the big
buzz games. I know that I would not have chosen to buy so many WWII
titles, but finding cheap deals, or being swayed by some interest in
the topic is enough to pick one up. On the other hand, the eras you're
most interested in have been historically hard to find at all. It's
only recently that they've gotten many decent implementations.

Yes, my first reaction was that I clearly needed more games on the Medieval period.

Interesting exercise. How are you all handling wargame systems? For example, I'd count ASL as one WW2 wargame and not count the individual modules. On the other hand, I'd count each TCS and OCS title as a separate entity. I'd probably count CC:E and CC: P as separate entities, but not CC:M or CC:Resistance, for example, since they're expansions. This sound about right before I start counting stuff?

You could do it that way certainly, but I went for simplicity and just counted each boxed game and magazine - so each ASL module would count as a separate game.

The geek list is awesome. I'm still working on one blending games, books and movies by time period (it's a slow slog).

This is fun:

Ancient: 3 1/4*
Medieval: 4 1/4*
Ren thru 18th c: 2 1/4*
Napoleonic: 0
Crimean War: 1/4*
ACW: 10
WW1/RCW: 21
WW2: 26
Post-WW2/Modern: 8

* Art of Siege quad

I chose not to count expansions separately, which in my collection is basically a lot more World War II stuff -- modules and battle packs for Lock 'n Load and Combat Commander.

I just started my wargame collection in 2013 so I only have 31 games. Here's the breakdown;

Ancients: 3
Dark Ages: 1
Renaissance: 0
18th Century: 0
Napoleonic: 12
ACW: 1
Other 19th Cent: 0
WWI: 0
WWII: 13
Post-WWII: 1

I've concentrated on the periods that interest me the most. I'm sure that over the years my interests will broaden, as will my collection. I can happily report that of my collection there are only 3 unplayed so far.

Let's see:

Ancient: 14
Dark Ages/Medieval: 5
Renaissance: 1
Japanese Sengoku-Jidai: 3
17th Century: 2
Age of Reason: 3
Napoleonic: 10
ACW: 0
Other 19th Century: 0
WWI: 2
WWII: 1
Post-WWII/Cold War: 6

Quite unusual, I have more interest in Post-WWII than in WWII.

Since my father was crippled in WWII, I grew up with a keen interest in that War. So when I started buying games, I set out to acquire every AH strategic/operational level game they made, and my collection reflects that.
ACW-2
WW2-14 (all AH except 1)
Vietnam-1
Desert Storm-1
What-if-7 (all SPI except 2)
Scifi-3

No real surprise for me as I knew my collection was heavily orientated towards the Ancients period:

Napoleonic: 0

Well, this seemed like a nice easy thing to do on a lazy New Year's Day. Here is the accounting...

No real surprises for me here. I am mostly a WW2 and post-war fan when it comes to wargaming, with some interest in Ancients, Nappy, and ACW. I also added Sci-Fi/Fantasy, but I restricted my accounting to only those games that meet my criteria for being counted as wargames (i.e. I counted Star Fleet Battles, but did not include Twilight Imperium).

Finally, I have to say that at one point I did physically arrange my games on the shelf according to genre/period. I hated it! I couldn't handle the mish-mash of box sizes and shapes. I have since returned to arranging my games by publisher and box size/shape. Much better!

My turn, games only no expansions:

Ancients: 3
Renaissance: 4
F&I/WoI/1812: 14
Pirate: 1
Civil War: 3
Other 19th century: 2
WW2: 10
Other 20th century: 4

No surprise that the early American wars (French & Indian, WoI, 1812) are my highest, that's my main area of interest. I'm surprised that WW2 is so high, but half of those are card game throw-ins for trades (Battle for Hill 218, Airwar Pacific) or Against the Odds postcard games that are included in my GMT orders. Most of the rest are solitaire games, which is my other interest.

The 20th century games are Volko Ruhnke's COIN games and his Labyrinth.
