Hi there.

So as the title says I've been trying to track down a board game from my youth and am at a loss!

Description:
The board consisted of the planets of the solar system in a spiral fashion.
The aim if I can remember was to traverse the board from Pluto in towards the Sun(not sure about that).
The gameplay consisted of categories of questions from general knowledge to specialist categories such as sport and music(again not certain on that).

We are talking about maybe late 80s to early 90s when I was playing this. I presume the game was also released around that period.
I think it may have been Waddingtons but again I can't remember for sure.

That is all I can remember. Quite vague I know but maybe someone remembers! Thanks for reading.

Putting the clues you have given into the Advanced Search, I came up with:
Passports to the Planets

Or Solarquest? It's 1985 and Hasbro - which is about as common as Waddingtons.

Yeah this is it! Thanks for all the answers.

I forgot that it was totally a kids game and thus my interest in renewing my fondness for this particular game has dwindled somewhat haha.
