The Home Office assurances that the law would not be used for what, on the face of the law, it is designed to be used for are laughable (and moreover, if that is true, why have the law in the first place?).

Of course the government can ram this through with the Parliament Act, but at least there will be delay.

This is a classic example of the advantages of a bicameral legislature, whatever the flaws of the current House of Lords.
