Russian Rope-A-Dope: Turn 16

Hitler Directive
(The game was played ignoring Hitler Directives, but are being rolled retroactively to see what effect they might have had.)

The initial die is... even! Directive C remains in effect:
• No divisions across the Don
• 2 mechanized divisions in the North (there is only 1)
• No Retreats are in effect.
• Capture Grozny!
• Capture Maykop!
• Capture Novorossiysk!
• Capture Rostov!
• Capture Tuapes!

The Axis may not be able to accomplish all this, so we’ll keep track separately of Directive VPs awarded to the Soviets.

Turns
A Panzer division occupies Rostov which re-establishes supply to the south, but the north is still out of luck. Rumanian and Italian units are racing around to try to plug up various gaps, which is pretty much tacit acknowledgement that the situation has turned hopeless. To address the supply situation, the Axis will end up pushing a new railhead east to N3340, with a truck supply established at N3238. The Soviets break through across the Don in the Stalingrad region on rows N3800 and N3700, and a mech unit races forward tagging the Axis air unit and forcing it to evacuate. The southern front is starting to dissolve into unconnected pockets of fighting, with Soviet units starting to range freely in between.

Score
Without Hitler Directives: Axis/Soviets unchanged at 111/122.

With Hitler Directives, the Soviets are awarded 2 points each for the failure of the Axis to control Gozny and Tuapes, so Axis: 111, Soviets 126. [Hitler Directive awards: Grozny 2, Tuapes 2].

Turn 17

Hitler Directive
Another even initial die so Directive C remains in effect:
• No divisions across the Don
• 2 mechanized divisions in the North
• No Retreats are in effect.
• Capture Grozny!
• Capture Maykop!
• Capture Novorossiysk!
• Capture Rostov!
• Capture Tuapes!

Turns
An overrun attack near Armavir (S2432) frees another armor stack to move back and try to shore up the flank, but the Soviets simply have too many avaible units and are able to surround most of the Axis units in the south, overrun the air unit in the area, and capture Tikkoretsk.

Score
Modifications to the Soviet score due Hitler Directives will be in [brackets].

With the fall of Tikkoretsk (5), the Axis/Soviet score changes from 111/122[126] to 106/127[131]. Hitler Directives award another 2 points each for Grozny and Tuapes, modifying the scores to 106/127[135] [Grozny 4, Tuapes 4].

Turn 18

Hitler Directive
Hitler wakes up from a Bad Dream (initial roll odd), realizes he’s in a Bad Dream (sees the map), and rolls a 5 on the 2nd die. At 106 VPs, the die roll modifier is 11 – 18 = -7. So, it doesn’t matter what the 2nd die was, Directive D is now in effect:
• No divisions across the Don
• 4 mechanized divisions in the North
• No Retreats are in effect.
• Capture Grozny!
• Capture Maykop!
• Capture Novorossiysk!
• Capture Rostov!
• Capture Tuapes!
• Capture Stalingrad by Turn 20.

Given the current deteriorating situation for the Axis, the die roll modifiers will continue to become more negative ensuring that Directive D is guaranteed to remain in effect until the Axis VP total falls to 59 or less, at which point might turn to Directive C which would remove Stalingrad from the list.

Turns
Attempts to free ZOC’d infantry units in the central region along the Don River basin meets with total failure – I guess they were taking the no retreat command to heart. Three individual 9-9 infantry divisions ended up attempting overrun attacks at odds of 1-2, two rolled a 6 for AE and the last suffering an Eng result. Thirty-six combat factors reduced to 4! A provisional defensive line was formed around Rostov. The Soviets are finally able to crush the large infantry group west of Stalingrad which mech units advance to the Donets. In the south the Soviets consolidate their positions.

Score
The Germans took too many losses west of Stalingrad and no longer maintain a continuous front to row N3600, so 1 VP to the Soviets. Hitler Directives additionally award 2 for Grozny and 1 for Tuapes, and the scores change from 106/127[135] to 106/128[139] [Grozny 6, Tuapes 5].

Turn 19

Hitler Directive
Directive D is guaranteed to remain in effect:
• No divisions across the Don
• 4 mechanized divisions in the North
• No Retreats are in effect.
• Capture Grozny!
• Capture Maykop!
• Capture Novorossiysk!
• Capture Rostov!
Capture Tuapes! (Have awarded the maximum of 5 VPs to the Soviets)
• Capture Stalingrad by Turn 20.

Turns
The situation has completely deteriorated for the Axis. The Soviest surround almost all remaining infantry units defending the Chir River in the north, and armor units are operating freely between the Donets and Don rivers as well as crossing the Donets in the east. Millerovo, Lihkovskoy, Rostov, and Taganrog all fall to the onslaught. Axis resistance in the south is being mopped up, while German mountain units plan an exit strategy that involves fake Turkish passports.

Score
The Soviets take control of Millerovo (5), Lihkovskoy (5), Rostov (15), and Taganrog (5). The Axis are unable to maintain a continuous front (1 VP to Soviets.) Hitler Directives award 2 VPs each to the Soviets for Grozny and Rostov. These update the score from 106/128[139] to 76/159[174] [Grozny 8, Rostov 2, Tuapes 5].
