The original rules call for a Spellcaster's Magic Value to fluctuate randomly. I thought it would be fun to have the Magic Value depend (more or less) on the SpellCaster's experience instead, so I made this simple table. Instead of merely rolling against the SpellCaster's Magic Value when casting a spell, roll a d6 and add the SpellCaster's Magic Value to the result.

MV + d6___________Spell Result

__11_____________Success, reduce Magic Value by 1
7 to 10___________Success
5 or less__________Failure, add 1 to Magic Value

This table preserves the same probabilities for success & failure for a given MV as the original rules. But with the table, the lower the guy's MV is, the more likely he is to increase his MV value with each spell attempt. So newbies (MV = 2) advance pretty quickly through MV 3 and 4, and then eventually reach MV 5, at which point they might sometimes fluctuate back down to 4 temporarily.
