My favorite 18xx game for six players is two games of 1846 with three players each.

We use a low-tech solution.

In Eurorails we put a 12-sided die in the box. When you move and stop, you set the die to show how much movement you have left.

In Martian Rails and other games in which trains can move faster than 12, we use a 20-sided die.
