Suburbia building accessories for sale
(Please do not discuss specific prices in this thread, so it won’t get shut down)

I made these building accessories for Suburbia. Their function is to make the most important buildings recognizable from the other side of the table, and act as reminders for the players of what buildings needs the most attention. The buildings I’ve chosen to make are those that are affected by other players’ suburbs, and a few other important ones like the casino, PR firm and law office. Now that I have inspected the quality of the 3d prints and tested them in play, I’m ready to sell these to other people.

What you get:
43 3d printed buildings scaled to fit on top of the game tiles.
Here is the full breakdown of what buildings you get. https://www.dropbox.com/s/bzbfv79uvag38u4/Suburbia%203d%20bu... Note that the resort and farm buildings(4 in total) are not included in my pictures except the 3d renders, but these will be included if you buy. The buildings are white and made of a melted polyester the printers call polyamide. It has a sandy finish, a bit like frosted glass or very tiny fibreglass. The material is strong, lightweight and slightly flexible, so it also reminds me a bit of bone.
Since they are made by 3d printing the models will be perfect copies of those you see in the pictures, with a high production quality. The prints are being made by a third party 3d printing service. I’ve used them several times before to make precise prototypes and other designs, and they always deliver good quality at the lowest price I’ve found in the business.

What you have to do:
I do 3d prints as part of my day job sometimes, but I do not have a store or anything like that, and this is something I’m doing in my freetime for very little profit, so the ordering method will be less straightforward than normal online shopping. Before you can buy these you need to help me make it happen.

3d printing is quite expensive, at least when you compare to mass produced plastic items made in china. To get the price down, I need to order these in bulk. The more I can order, the lower the price. To get the bulk price I need to talk to the printing company and negotiate something, so I do not know what kind of price I’ll be able to get yet. At the moment the price without bulk discount is slightly lower than the price for buying a new Suburbia on amazon.co.uk. With bulk ordering, I might be able to get the price down to half that. To make such a deal, I need to present a good number of buyers.

Here is my plan for getting these to you:
1. Get PM’s from all people interested in buying.
2. Negotiate a good price for the prints, based on the number of PM’s I got.
3. PM all interested people with the price, asking them to send their adress and number of sets if they are still interested.
4. Get payment for all orders.
5. Order the prints from the manufacturer.
6. recieve the prints and send them to you.

After this initial bulk order I will keep selling a few more sets that I'll stock up at home. After they run out I will keep selling through an automated online print on demand solution for full price to any people who missed out on the bulk order.

About shipping:
The printing company produce models both in North America and Europe, so shipping will not be too expensive for anyone on either of those continents. For Europe and the rest of the world you will get them shipped from London, for North America the shipping will be from somewhere in the USA, depending on who I get to recieve and resend the bulk order there. There might be possible to arrange bulk order deals to save shipping for other places as well, like Australia for example, though those will be shipped from Europe and not from a factory on your continent. It’s up to you guys. But before we plan that, let’s first focus on step one in my plan and get this going.

So right now I am at step one. I need anyone interested in buying these to send me a PM, specifying the number of sets they want. If you don't have it in your profile, please also tell me what country/state you live in. Sending this PM does of course not commit you to buy, it is just for me to get a number of potential buyers. I cannot give you a price estimate yet. If you say yes now and later pull out because of the price, I have no problem with that. Keep in mind that because of the expensive production costs I’ll only make minimal profit from this. So please don’t make this harder for me than it needs to be, don’t treat me like a big bad company if I don’t respond quickly to all questions and demands.

Now please send me your PM’s(aka GeekMail), and please spread the word so that we can make the price as low as possible.

Original post:

Ever since I started playing this game we've been using Catan buildings to mark buildings that are affected by other players' suburbs, as this makes it much easier to keep track of what is going on. As I've just started working in the 3d printing field, I thought it would be great to make custom 3d printed buildings to mark each of these tiles. The idea is that as players get familiar with these they will recognize these buildings with a quick glance, making it easier to keep track of the other players. I've tried to make these buildings as easy to recognize as possible, while keeping in mind how small they will be. Most of them are no longer than 2cm on any side.

Before I do the final touches of these designs, I'd like to hear from other Suburbia fans what they think of these, and what I can do to improve the designs. Do you recognize all the buildings here? Some are from the Inc. expansion.
EDIT: Added images of printed buildings here.

Ohh, I like this. A lot.

I've played with extra cubes. We put the cubes on tiles that change what other people will score, or what you will score based on other tiles in other suburbs. If the tile only relates to your own suburb it does not get a cube.

This takes it a step further, and helps distinguish between different tiles. Very interested in this.

i had the thought where people can put their phones over the tiles and 3d buildings will pop up to life. Sort of like augmented reality

Thanks for the encouraging words guys, and thanks for the thumbs and my first geekgold I can't wait to send these to the printer, but before I do that I need to take another critical look at these. Constructive criticism is very much welcome, I want these to be as good as possible, without making them more detailed.

That might happen. But 3d printing is extremely expensive, so I think very few people would want to order them. If a plastic factory could make moulds of them and mass produce, that would be awesome. Interested Ted? whistle

I don't even own a copy of this game yet and i want these! I think a future Kickstarter is in store. Have you seen Danny DnDeeples for Lords of Waterdeep he thought only a few people would want those and the response has been over whelming! i think you should give it a shot!

Like these. A few thoughts/questions.

Will the buildings obscure important details on the tiles? I don't want to be moving these around every turn.

Will they be color coded? The buildings shapes are terrific, but I'm wondering if it would help if the buildings were matching colors. That might simplify things even more. So the color indicates the zoning category (residential, commercial, etc) and the shape indicates the specific building type (restaurant, school, etc).

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Karl. These models will mostly cover only the artwork in the middle of the tiles, some of the bigger ones might cover some of the rule text as well. In those cases I think this can be solved by placing the building slightly closer to the top corner where the price is printed. Personally I'm not concerned about having to lift up a building once in a while(remember you will only have a few of these), and I know most of these rules by heart now anyway. But you have a good point. I will take into consideration how to minimize how much of the tile text they cover when I have my next look at these.

As for color coding, I do not think this is a good idea, as it might confuse players into thinking the colored buildings do the same thing except they affect different colors. And some buildings affect a different color from their own, adding more confusion, like the hotel. And as many of these buildings are not color oriented at all, it will look prettier to have them all just white. If many other people feel strongly about putting colors on these, I might change my mind.

I will probably get these printed by the end of the week, feeling really exited about this!

You probably could get away with simply making a cityscape of these buildings without needing to have them physically on top of the tiles they represent.

Edit: Also, love the idea of color coding them, or having a base hex color coded, and leave the model to be painted .

Hmm just to be clear, I do not intend to create bases, those hexes in the picture will not be part of the print, those represent the actual tiles to show the scale. But small colored bases might be something, yes. Yeah I guess the printed buildings could be placed somewhere else than on the tiles if people like that, didn't think of it.

I like the idea of placing them on the tile especially if they are not color coded, that way its another visual que to help players remember what they are doing/for etc. Also I am glad they wont have bases. Just my thoughts.

Yet another Wow. These are awesome indeed. Would love to buy a set for sure.

Don't be too quick to blow off the colour suggestion, we find it helps a lot. Currently we mark all buildings that react to a new Green build with a green cube, etc. That way we only have to check the tiles we own with the right cube colour on them. So it would be nice if the buildings had the same thing going, instead of having to check them all.

Thx for the wows guys I will seriously consider coloring the buildings connected directly to colors. Currently I'm figuring out how to get the prints made at a reasonable price. Though these are small there will be 44 of them in a full set(there are 2 of 16 of these, and 3 of 4 of them). With the method I'm looking at now, they will all have to be white, as they are all ordered as one printjob. Having some buildings colored separately in the 3d printing will push the price up a lot, to almost twice as much. The solution would probably be to have them colored afterwards instead.

I think you should make sure this catches Ted Aslpach's eye. Maybe it becomes an official expansion and Bezier Games helps fund the project. I would if I were him, this is brilliant!

Look forward to seeing pictures and getting session reports about the experience playing with this. Think this would create a rather awesome feel to the game, while also improving some playability issues.

Thanks, I think so too. I will "playtest" these quite publicly with strangers and people I barely know in my club London On Board, so I expect to get honest feedback from a wide variety of gamers.

These are great! I think leaving them all white to keep them affordable, then painting them would be fine. I'd get a set.
