Although famous in Geek circles for the two roles listed in the Subject Line, Schell also won an Academy Award for his role as defense attorney Hans Rolfe in the motion picture Judgement at Nuremberg (1961). He received two additional nominations over his career. While he played Germans in a number of World War II films, his nationality was actually Austrian.

Every time I think of him, the first movie that comes to mind is Cross of Iron. Like the movie (big James Mason fan; he had one of the cool est voices ever!) but I thought the book was even better.

Sad news.

I remember him primarily as Hauptmann Stransky, from Cross of Iron:

Probably not exact, but favorite lines:

"I want to win the Iron Cross!"

"Ah, those French girls..."

"Steiner! I don't know how to reload!" laugh

Dr. Reinhardt, from that "challenged" Disney movie The Black Hole:

"On my ship... you ask." (when the robot Maximilian was about to cut up... VINCENT? And Perkins' character was demanding that Reinhardt rein him in... I think)

Waffen-SS General Wilhelm Bittrich, from A Bridge Too Far:

"Flatten... Arnhem."

And one that I remember from 1970's TV:

Although the Brian Keith character is the only one I remember lines from for that one.

Despite the crazy-quilt artistic choices that collide with no rhyme nor reason, the Nostalgia Power of this movie still remains irresistible …

I also liked Maximilian Schell in The Castle, one of the better attempts to put Kafka on the screen, and The Man in the Glass Booth.

What sad news. His performance in Judgment at Nuremberg was brilliant.

It's a bit sad that such a fine actor will be remembered by most of us (yes, me included) as Captain Stransky.

RIP, Hans Rolfe.
