So about a year ago I got bitten by the board gaming bug thanks to a coworker. Shortly after I started watching "TableTop", Wil Wheaton's YouTube show.

I Immediately fell in love with the Geek Chic table that he played on, but didn't have the $3k and/or didn't want to wait a year to get one even if money was no issue.

Enter the DIY Geek Chic-esque table project.

I'm a big fan of the rustic look. So when it came time to build mine, I wanted to use Barn Board. So glad I did! Here's two photos of my tables. The larger of the two is a 44" x 68" (36" x 60" game vault) normal height table. The second is a 36" table top that fits over an Ikea Lack Coffee table.

Let me know if you'd like the plans for either (or both) of these. I'm happy to share.

Matt

It looks a lot like it is just a table top with a rim on it, and if you can't work out how to make that yourself then the plans won't help you. Are there fold out sections on the second one? More pics?

No worries, I love sites like that as well so I am glad I could spread the word even a little. I will take the advice and the generous tip.

So you just made table toppers, basically, that elevate the edges and provide a "recessed" surface? That's ingenious. I'm about to lose my game room, and I'll need a way to stash games while keeping cats off of them. Consider your idea so totally and completely stolen.

Thanks for posting!

Hey all, thanks so much for the fantastic comments!

Here's a quick mockup of the table cross-section. It's pretty simple. You can make the table any size you want, but here's how I structured the sides/ends.

If you use this schematic, your playing surface (game vault) will be 3" less than however wide/long you make your main sheet of plywood (the top brown rectangle).

I used this video for a guide on how to do the foam & velvet:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n_mCAP5wSw

In Practice:

I play-tested them (with Colosseum) for the first time two days ago and they performed remarkably.

If I were to do it over again, one thing I may do differently is instead of making the Velveteen & Foam tabletop the permanent table floor, I'd recommend just leaving the sanded plywood surface as the game vault floor and creating a velvet and foam covered insert to place in the game vault.

Cheers,

Matt

Geoff, the tables turned out better than I'd hoped in most respects. I have three (3) cats and my games room is where we coop them up at night so I am no stranger to battling cat hair. I can only imagine how much of a PITA it'd be to constantly be removing cat hair!

@cornixt

Attachable drink holders are in development, but that's about all the plans I have for any add-on accessories. I kind of limited myself by using barn board, but my requirements weren't terribly sophisticated

Game on!

I understand this goes against the spirit of DIY , but here's a solution: http://www.ebay.de/itm/310851875415

Saw those! Thanks Paulo.

I'm not sure I'd have enough of a lip to attach them to tho....however they'd be great as an interim solution!

Thanks for sharing.
