Poll
So, on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being 'I don't care.' and 5 being 'Holy shit I'll be watching every second!' how much are you looking forward to this year's winter Olympics?
5 - I will be watching every second! Love it!
4 - I am interested, will definitely take in the events I want to see.
3 - It's another Olympics, I can take it or leave it.
2 - Eh, it's mostly a snoozer, I won't be bothering with most of it.
1 - These Olympics are dumb and I don't care about them.

I'll watch it if I'm somewhere where it's on the TV.

At home we don't have cable, satellite, antenna, etc. connections. Will keep abreast of results via internet news.

Having the games about 13 time zones away definitely brings down the excitement level for me. I'm going to hear "spoilers" for the events that I might want to watch, before I watch them. It always happens.

I lost interest in the Olympics when they opened them up to professionals. I couldn't care less what happens.

But I did donate some money every year - until I found out the US teams uniforms are made in China. No more donating.

Most teams this year are trying to point out that the athletes will be wearing clothing made in their own country, where possible. The US team, for instance, will tell you the source of the wool comes from Oregon (I think it was).
Same goes for the Canadian team; they found someone to make things in Mid-Eastern Canada. But all of the replica stuff, that they want us to buy for ourselves? China. India. Singapore.

What I don't get is why they need a famous designer to design the clothing. Go to someone who can afford to own 26 supercars and give them millions of dollars more to come up with something that is crap but has their name on it, giving them even more publicity?
They should be giving millions of dollars to amateur athletes instead.
(I'm with you on the professional athletes involvement ruining the spirit of the games)

I'm usually just ambivalent toward the Olympics, but this year I'm actively not following them. The anti-gay stance of Putin and the issues with the living conditions of Sochi, though, have driven me away. I wish the US had decided not to participate at all.

Agreed. I normally would watch, but the whole thing feels skeevy and disgusting to me.

I'm most interested in the curling, while my wife and daughter will probably want to watch the ice skating. I'll probably also watch things like the ski jump, the downhill skiing, and some of the snowboard events. Biathlon. Cross-country skiing. US and Canada hockey games (although I'm not a real hockey fan).

And what is this new "Team Ice Skating" thing? Isn't it just two people skating? I thought that was called "pairs". Is it four people doing something synchronized? What makes Team Skating any different from the skating and ice dancing they've had for years?

Other than that, I just want to watch the coverage to see how poorly Russia has done getting ready. (My personal dose of schadenfreude.) It's not like they haven't known this date was coming for the last 6-8 years. Such poor mis-management will scuttle Russia's chance to ever host another Olympics, winter or summer. With them out of real contention, that might open it up for other, different countries to get a chance.

The fact that Sochi was chosen in the first place shows just how corrupt the process of selecting a city for these games was. Then you have the fact that 30% of the $51B budget is missing.

I plan to watch the opening ceremonies, but, really, I can honestly say that the X Games generate more interest in my house.

Also, considering some of the prior terrorist incidents in Russia, I wouldn't be shocked if something major happened. Saddened, but not shocked.

I love the winter olympics but since we don't have cable or satellite, it's not an option.

I love ALL the events, and I remembered being able to see the Biathlon and other less popular events broadcast during the day. For a while now, it's all about the prime time experience that is full of bios and spots that were pre-recorded and very little time of actual live events.

It's infuriating and manipulative.

I'll also catch highlights on the internet.

There are ways to watch over foreign VPN connections:

http://www.wikihow.com/Watch-the-Olympics-Online

Scroll down. I have not tested any of these so YMMV.

Edit: I might have to try this for this year's Crucible.
