I've got a KS campaign coming up, and I feel weakest in marketing. I've been looking in the stickied threads here, but didn't find comprehensive advice on this topic.

How does one do a "press release" and to what websites? Where can we go to get our game reviewed (both video and article form)? What are the major game conventions? What other marketing stuff should we be doing?

Thanks!

Might be a good to start with these

http://boardgamegeek.com/forum/31/boardgamegeek/press-releas...

http://boardgamegeek.com/browse/user/numreviews

http://boardgamegeek.com/forum/32/boardgamegeek/conventions

As far as what you should be doing, drafting a basic marketing plan would be a good start http://smallbiztrends.com/2008/06/one-page-marketing-plan.ht...

But since most people simply ignore doing a business plan or marketing plan........whistle

Have you already looked into Manufacturing and Distribution?

Do you have a website set up for the company or game?

Have you set up social media accounts?

If the game is ready to go to publication have you entered it in the database here on BGG?

Major conventions, really? See this tells me you have done any research yet into this and all of this should be done before you even think about going live on kickstarter

There are plenty of others and it depends on what type of game you have, there are plenty of conventions for wargames for instance

Kickstarter related this is a must read

These are all great ideas to push you in the right direction, however any reviews you may have had done are some of the best things you can do. There are sites like Kicktrax that help to promote your game. Where are you going to advertise? and what kind of plan or money do you have set aside for that?

BGG has weighted ads which means the more you pay the more often they come up. Many sites have this. The ad space is shared with other ads and who ever pays the most get more views.

There are plenty of sites out there to help you but you have to do some advanced work and if you are not an artist or have the ability to make banners to use, you will have to pay someone to do it for you.

Something else that might help are local demos of your game at a local game store or somewhere there might be a lot of foot traffic. You may want to set these up in advance with store owners in your area. by a small gift certificate and have raffle tickets you give to folks who try your game. At the end of say two hours or so you pull the raffle ticket and they get the gift card. This help the store owner and you at the same time.

If there are local gaming groups that use the site Meet Up to plan their gaming sessions you might be able to get into a few of these. You are going to need a few 1000 people to look at your game at least. Depending on what kind of numbers you need to complete your kickstarter, figure that many of the folks that look at it will not buy it. so you have to play the percentage game a bit here. If you got 40% of people that looked at your game to buy it, how many folks would have to look at it.

You are also going to do a much better job of selling your game in person in a game store or something like that then you will through the computer. Good luck to you!

Thank you very much for the lists and advice!

My only concern is the "press release" link looks like just another forum. I was wondering about press releases for outside media outlets.

Do you recommend somehow raising the money for the full artwork for a good quality demo before doing the KS?

I understand ads and have them ready, just a numbers game. Other marketing, not sure. At game stores do you give them a card or something hoping they go to your website and submit their email so you can email them months later inviting them to the KS? How can you possibly show the game to a significant amount of people in person who will remember your game? In probably 5 years of on and off developing this game, I've probably asked 5 times on FB for testers, 3 times on BGG, and personal invites resulted in maybe 70 people that have played it.
