I played a lot this weekend at the TempleCon demo booth (they were pretty sick of me, sis, and friend I think by the end) and it still bugs me how binary boarding is. Thematically, just docking with a ship can't always be successful. In addition, a ship size 5 has just as easy a time docking with a size 5 as it does a 10. Am I the only one who is bothered by it?

4 - (Target - Attacker); roll higher
1=Fail (could also mean that your marines are shot into space)
10=always success
Keep limitation of smaller can only dock with equal or larger.
Lower the first number (4) to make it easier based on personal preference.

Like all great variants this hasn't been tested at all. I'm slightly more interested in what others think about the marine mechanic and if anyone had a better idea.

I think the mechanic is fine as is. I think it just makes it streamlined and abstracts out the actual boarding process. Less to worry about.

Isn't rolling a die abstracting the boarding process?

In seriousness, thanks for replying. Curious what others think. I seem to be alone in my opinion within my game group as well.

I just posted in the Strategy thread about how I found a lot of the strategy to be in the Marines and boarding to take over empty ships. I've only played one game so far, so I'd like to try it more with the official rules, but I dig the idea of there still being a slight dice roll chance of failure even without other marines aboard.

There are cards to deal with empty ships, if you don't play with many Marines: Quick Reaction Force is a Marine you can deploy during battle, Exceptional Heroism is a tactic that kills any boarding Marines, plus a couple Hidden upgrades ('Daedalus' Anti-Assault Rockets, for one). You could also beef up on Frigates and take advantage of their Escort.
