Here’s the new campaign. I’ll be doing separate updates for each season, beginning of course, with Barbarossa

STRATEGY
The Germans will push hard to clear the Russian front line on turn one, especially all the rail lines so that the depots can advance the maximum. They will then turn north and south to capture the Dnepr Bend and Leningrad, respectively, before turning back towards the center and hopefully catching most of the Soviet Army in a big pocket in front of Smolensk.

The Soviets will toss all they have into the center on the Smolensk-Moscow axis and not overcommit to Kiev. They will try and keep as much of their army in being as possible, retreating where necessary and giving up land for time.

TURN ONE

The Germans clear out the front line and luck out in the south, isolating everything north of the Odessa Military District. Riga falls. Unfortunately, an early Russian MOVE and a late LOGISTICS means that a lot of stuff manages to escape encirclement, forcing the German into less-than-ideal plays with three of his four Panzer Armies. Also, three of five Stukas flip in their first activation. Finally, two of the German depots only advance four hexes. All things considered, not an ideal star for Barbarossa.

TURNS TWO THROUGH FOUR
The Germans don't manage to create any large pockets, but they do attrit the hell out of the Russians. They take the Dnepr Bend, Kiev and isolate Leningrad on Turn Four. As Turn Five dawns, there's no chance of taking Moscow. As they only get three panzer HQ activations, decisions need to be made. They can press in the South, or the North, but not both.

TURN FIVE
There are a large number of Russian divisions still west of the Valdai Hills and it occurs to the Germans that, with Leningrad gone and an open hole in the Russian lines around Rzhev, the best thing to do might be a push with 4th and 3rd Panzer to grab the unoccupied swampland west of Rybinsk. This will serve two purposes: it will cut off the last big group of Russian units near Leningrad and it will plant the German army right on the doorstep of a large concentration of Russian VP cities next Spring. We thus reluctantly decide to not use the 2nd PANZER activation chit this turn. We hope to get MOVE before 1st PANZER in order to consolidate our forces in the region of AGS.

The Russians, meanwhile, choose MOVE as their initiative chit and try to desperately plug the holes in their lines. The Germans take Kharkov and form a mini-pocket there, which is eliminated in the subsequent German COMBAT phase. The Russian divisions west of the Valdai manage to pull east through the Hills with minimal losses, although Germans take Tikhvin and advance through the swamps north of the hills.

TURN SIX
The German objective this turn will be to clean out the Valdai and reach the river line in front of Rybinsk before the snow flies. They do this handily, activating a MOVE first and getting an early LOGISTICS as well. Voronezh and Kalinin both fall as well. The Stukas take out several steps at Odessa and the Soviet redoubt on the Black Sea is finally overrun by the Romanians.

The Germans end the season down by 22 Infantry and 10 Mechanized steps, holding Leningrad, Odessa, Talinin, Voronezh (!) and threatening Rostov.

The Soviets are going to have to do two things in this winter: push the Germans back into the swamps in the north (creating a buffer between them and the plains with their passel of victory cities to the east) and take back Talinin and Voronezh, if possible. We’ll concentrate on the northern front and let the situation at Voronezh sort itself out.
