I've had a bunch of requests for us to make a Rugby League game.....being up in FNQ and all!

I've been tinkering around with an idea for some months but was over complicating things trying to figure out meters gained on the field. It was last that it dawned on not to worry about that side of the game, and keep it simple with plenty of chances to score.

I've got a working beta version now that is actually a lot of fun. It simply allows player to run through their attacking phase of 6 tackles running forward with the ball with the chance to bust the line. The defense has a chance to tackle, but also a chance to crumble.

We've include penalties, drop goal attempts, try saving tackles and even the video ref for the decision to go upstairs!

They are currently 8 dice. 5 for your players, 1 for Defense, 1 for the Ref and a scoring die to see if a TRY has been scored.

I played through a game today and NSW pipped QLD 17 - 16 on the back of a drop goal on the siren....so this might be NSW chance to win a game ?

It is a dice game. There is some decision making and push your luck, but it's simple, fast and fun. For the moment all you'll need is a D6 and refer to the tables.......but all our games have laser engraved custom dice when produced.

The quick rules are on the image below....so put your boots on and play some Pocket Rugby! If you'd like to playtest, I'd love your feedback!

I just tried this out for the first time, during which the Melbourne Storm ran out 58-44 winners over the Bulldogs in an incredibly high scoring game.

I also tried a makeshift rugby union version (no tackle limit, union scoring applies), which had a dominant Australian team demolish the mighty All Blacks 52-39.

Thanks for that Marc - maybe 5 min halves would produce a more realistic scoreline.

Apart from the that, did you enjoy the game? Did it play well?

Yeah, I did enjoy it. In fact, I'm planning to simulate a competition with it. I also think five minute halves would definitely be the way to go.

Running this through playtesting and the first observation is the rules are murkey! argh! You refer to the team members as players, and the players as players. Took a moment to realize that this likely did not mean the players at the table.

Ok, first half of a playtest, likely doing this wrong.
Team A
1: roll the PLAYMAKER: a 2. Pass to B.
2: roll B: a 6: High Ball.
3: Defense rolls a 5: Tackle: The try is not stopped
4: Scoring roll: 3. No Try.
5: Ball goes to Team B
Team B
1: roll the PLAYMAKER: a 2. Pass to B.
2: roll B: a 6: Hit Up
3: Defense rolls a 1: Contest
4: Ref roll: 2: High Tackle.
5: Kick at Goal: a 2: success. Score 2 points.
6: Ball goes to Team A
Team A
1: roll the PLAYMAKER: a 5. Pass to F.
2: roll F: a 4: Pass. Pass to B
3: roll B: a 4: Hit Up.
3: Defense rolls a 6: Mistackle:
4: Defense rolls a 4: Tackle: The try is not stopped
5: Scoring roll: a 5: Try. 4 points.
6: Ball goes to Team B
Team B
1: roll the PLAYMAKER: a 6: Kick
2: roll kick: a 6: success. score 1 point.
3: roll the PLAYMAKER: a 5: Pass to F.
4: roll F: a 1: Hit up.
5: Defense rolls a 4: Tackle: Try is stopped.
6: Ball goes to Team A

Hopefully was playing that right?

Ok. More plays with friends and showed it to the local group.

Some observations.

Most of the players thought the chart worked fine and liked how the dice played out.

Nearly all though had some trouble with the wording of the rules. Some a little. Some alot. The rules need better wording. Otherwise it played pretty smoothly.

Two players observed that the defending player has zero choice. Its just a random roll. No decisions. Bemusingly two liked that aspect as for them the game could be played solitaire trying to score XYZ before being eliminated.

Great feedback - I'm going to tweak the Defender to allow him a chance to knock the ball loose if he rolls a HUGE HIT - like the the option he has when a TRY might be scored.

This at least allows for an interrupt to happen during the 6 tackles.

The rules will have an overhaul - for sure.

Good stuff John - I'll PM you re $10
