I thought some of you would see some entertainment value in this, as this is a correspondence I received on BGG this morning. I've also shared my reply to the individual. Of course, I'm not disclosing the identity as it is a private correspondence, but I think it's worth sharing so folks can see that one will have to field all kinds of customer concerns and complaints when publishing a game.

P.S. I don't know if this person is a customer or not.

Quote:
Subject Line: you should be ashamed

You are an unconscionable man. To update a game ( the hunters ) in such a short time and then to suggest that early supporters just sell or giveaway their copies underscores your scam-like personality and approach. You don't belong in this industry. You should be selling second hand cars or something similar.

To which I responded to as follows:

I'm sorry you do not agree with Consim Press reprinting a game that has sold out and looking to fix any rules corrections or adding clarifications that have since been requested when the game was first released.

You are suggesting I turn my back to customers and let known errors pass through to a second printing or not taking the time or to demonstrate the care to improve the package when printing it again.

I'm sorry. I am not the type of person that is going to let known errors or issues of the game get passed through with a new print run.

And folks were commenting what to do with the second printing coming, so sure, I suggested if they want the latest copy, they could consider selling or gifting the first edition should they so desire. I'm not giving a directive to anyone and I am entitled to an opinion (which others have expressed before).

And no one needs to buy a second printing. We have Living Rules and updated charts to address any issues with the initial print run, so no one needs a second printing of the game, and they all know that already given the support we provide for the game today.

And, btw, yes, I do support the entire hobby and all publishers with the CSW web site. I publish games out of the sheer enjoyment of receiving harrassing emails from folks like you.

Respectfully.

Hey John,

Welcome to the world of dealing with the "1%".

My favorite customer support rants, from when I worked at HPS Simulations:

"How dare you leave out my Grandfather's AA platoon!" (Battalion level Bulge game....think about it)

"I throw your games in the canal!" (from an apparently certified crazy Belgian, I don't even remember his issue)

Well anyway, yeah. They are out there

I think I should hold a contest for best flaming e-mail. There is an art to this, after all.

One of my favorites was a designer response by Randy Reed to a game reviewer in Fire & Movement. I forgot the issue and what game it was, but it was classic.

P.S. Love your avatar, John!

People are crazy.

ps. What updated charts should I download from the Consim Press page? And, is that even really necessary?

A few insults (clean) that I have seen or heard in various venues:

We have a message from your mother. She says "Boooooooo!"
Does your mother know any other English besides "Hello, sailor"?
You couldn't find your rear-end with a strip map, compass, and both hands.
This is what happens when you let chimps use a typewriter.
Were you sober when you wrote this?

Sure thing. Look for the download file, "Player Aid Cards." Along with this, be sure to download, "Rules Booklet". Jack and I are coordinating now on an updated Living Rules book, and I'll announce when it's been posted.

I've added posting or update dates on our download page to help folks track things. And we will include version #s on the charts moving forward as well.

Quick update: I should have the updated Living Rules posted very soon...later today. So hold off printing anything now until I announce it's available. Thanks!

Oh dear.

I did respond to customer requests by making a new counter for the second printing, does that make me Evil too? Come to think of it, I have also been contemplating selling my car. I'm doomed.

And before anybody panics, the new counter is a Surfaced/Submerged marker. Personally, I have no difficulty remembering whether the attack I executed was a surface one or not, so I'll probably never use it, but there's been requests for it and we do have room on the counter sheet so why not? Is it so very wicked?

Hi John

I would like to join that contest for the best flaming e-mail. I work for the customer support of a computer gamer publisher. All I can tell that my chances for winning such a contest are big.

HA! Is that really the "more counters added" that people are getting bent out of shape over? Wow.

Well, didn't we already know that John was a prick for publishing a game about sinking innocent merchant vessels made out of cardboard?
What a horrible, horrible person.

(Which reminds me I have to get my next campaign underway...)

Post away. You can either post a flame mail from work, etc. or as a challenge for you creative types out there -- I'd like to see you construct the perfect, scathing flame email to Consim Press and post it here. Nothing is off limits...you can target myself, the designer, our next of kin.

The winner gets a FREE Hunters Coffee Mug. I'll leave the voting to Greg, Jack, and Ian (including myself) and we will judge all entries on Friday, Feb. 21. In case of tie, we'll give away two mugs.

Good luck, everyone!...and I know you won't disappoint, given the creative things we've seen done already in support of the game.

Oh, reprint? Every time I read a sessions report on this game I click through a few game store sites and I can't find it in stock anywhere - happy to hear that it's going back in print.

Thanks to Jack Beckman, I have posted a new version of the Living Rules (version 2.5).

Download the "Rules Booklet" file from our Downloads page:
http://www.consimpress.com/downloads/the-hunters/

Key changes are as follows:

9.4.2 Changed to clarify - But you must commit the amount of Forward Torpedoes/Aft Torpedoes/ Deck Gun Ammo before firing each type of weapon.
Used to read "all"

Added to the end of 9.4.6 (before the italics but at the end of the rule):
No range modifiers apply.

As well as the large portion of the text below:
U-Boats may never be on the surface when Escorts are present

10.9.2 clarified - [10.9.2] Scuttle attempts due to flooding are ...

Fiats are covered in a future release of The Hunters that focuses on the Italian sub fleet in the Med....

P.S. In all seriousness, we will have a future offering covering Italian subs. Greg is working on it!
