Hi Captains.

The first 8WT is in its last week, and it´s been a great success!

Due to a planned vacation in May I already set-up the next 8WT. If we manage to get all registrations (max. 20) till saturday we could start sunday/monday.
If not, starting date must be shifted by three weeks to March 30th.

Here´s the link:
The Hunters - Eight Week Tournament II

Here´s the concept and the rules:

Welcome to The Hunters - Eight Week Tournament II.

This Tournament is a Top Tonnage Tournament, covering the time from September 1939 to June 1943. Each week we will play 1 column of the [P1] table, six of the eight representing 6 months of war.
Kommandants will be assigned their patrols from the Tournament Director at the start of each week and will have 6 days to run their patrols and report their results. 7th day is reserved for book-keeping and rolling for new assignments.

Here are the details:

1. U-Boat/Rank
Each player will start with a Type VIIB U-boat, with the first patrol starting in September 1939. Starting rank will be "Kapitänleutnant" with a trained crew. Play will continue until June of 1943 or until sunk, scuttled, captured or removed from the tournament by other events.

2. Sunk, Scuttled, Captured
The Tournament will run till June ´43 (= 8 weeks playing time) or till there are no more Boats available to send on patrols. Players whose Crew was sunk, scuttled, or captured during the first week of play are allowed to re-start once with a new Boat. After that, if you´re sunk, scuttled, or captured your campaign ends.

3. Winner and Prices
The Tournament is a Top Tonnage tournament - the player with the highest number of sunk tonnage will be declared the winner, even if sunk, scuttled, or captured. Player that dropped out of the tournament due to other reasons will no longer be part of the ranking and are not eligable to receive prices.

Prices:
I will donate some GeekGold. In addition to that I hope participants will add some GG, too. Please add your donations to this list, not directly to me. All GG donated to this list till the end of the tournament will be divided by 6 and distributed in the following manner:
1st price is 3/6th of the GG.
2nd price is 2/6th of the GG.
3rd price is 1/6th of tne GG.

4. Ruleset. Optional Rules
The game is to be played with standard rules, including their most recent updates and FAQs as postet on the Consimpress website. The communtiy will help to post updates here in the comments section.
The Tournament is played with the following rules from the Optional Rules section:
- Increased Historical Targeting
- Variable Escort Quality
- Variable Aircraft Quality
- Resupply at Sea
- Evasive Maneuvers

5. Registration.
The Tournament is limited to 20 players. Each player can only participate with 1 U-Boat. To register add an item ("Add item" function below this text) to this list and copy the information block from the example item (Lines42) to the top part of your decription. This part must be kept upated and is reference for the tournament director. Feel free to post your partol logs, AAR´s below these basic informations in the comment section of your item. AAR´s are not mandatory.

6. Tournament Starting Date
The tournament will start the week following the date of the 20ths registration. Earliest start will be March 30th, OR if we´re fast enough March 9th. This is due to a planned vacation in May.

7. Time Frame (Tournament)
The tournament is played in a weekly period where 1 week represents 1 column of the [P1] table.
The following changes are made to the first two columns:
1st column runs from Sept.´39 to Jan´40 (5 months).
2nd column runs from Feb´40 to Jun´40 (5 months).

Although this might not be historically accurate it leads to a more even distribution of patrols within the playing weeks.

Week 1 Sep'39 - Jan'40
Week 2 Feb'40 - Jun'40
Week 3 Jul'40 - Dez'40
Week 4 Jan'41 - Jun'41
Week 5 Jul'41 - Dez'41
Week 6 Jan'42 - Jun'42
Week 7 Jul'42 - Dez'42
Week 8 Jan'43 - Jun'43

8. Time Frame (Week) / Reporting Results
A week starts at Monday of a week and will last till next Saturday. If assignments for a new week are posted before Monday players may start to play earlier. Each player must report his results by updating his entry until Saturday night. I won´t post a specific time here. I´m 6 to 8 hours ahead here, so when I wake up on Sunday morning I expect everything to be posted.

Players not reporting in time will suffer the following penalties:
1: Their tonnage for the week will be zero.
2: Crew advancements, promotions and decorations received this week will not be applied.
3: All possibla patrols for this week will be treated as failed patrols with all consequences.
4: The Captain will be downgraded one rank (lowest rank possible OlzS)
5: For the rest of the tournament, until the end of his career, the player must use the following picture as his BGG avatar:

9. Assignment Process
Book-keeping and rolls for patrol assignments will be done on Sundays. For each U-Boat there will be 3 assignments rolled, since this is the maximum a player can play wihtin 6 months. The patrols must be taken in the order rolled / listed and can be played as long as their starting date is wihtin the time span of the current period played. Based on Refit time you might not be able to play all patrols you´ve been assigned. Just ignore patrols that cannot be taken.

An additional d6 will be rolled for each Kommandant to determine if he´s allowed to choose his own patrol depending on his rank. Remember when you´re allowed to choose your own patrol it must be a legal patrol from the list of the current time period.

10. Special cases:
Rank increases wihtin a week will be taken into account for the rolls of the following week.

U-Boat upgrades work as described in the rules you may start your next patrol with your new U-Boat right after you received it. However the effect on the patrol assignments will be taken into account in the assignment rolls for the following week.

Captains permanently assigned to the Mediterranean or the Arctic may return to regular assignment procedure when they receive a new boat and crew due to a refit time of 5 or more months. If this happens contact the tournament director and he´ll provide you with new assignments for the rest of the week.

11. Cheating.
What can I say? I just assume no one is cheating. Why should you? Can you be proud of your victory when you know you achieved it by cheating? I couldn´t.
Cheating can lead to be excluded from the tournament and your tonnage set to zero.

Should we use the OPTIONAL [T6] and [T7] Rosters for a change?

If someone does a calculation ( I might do that if I find some time) and they turn out to be almost equal to the original charts in regards to tonnage, I don't have a problem leaving the players a choice which one they want to take.

Personally I don't use any ship charts. I use the counters posted here on BGG and only have them printed for the main charts. So limiting the tournament to only the optional charts would mean for me: Back to more boring chart rolling.

Are the optional charts different enough to make a change or provide a new challange?

Again, if they're balanced compared to the original charts I don't care which ones are used.

They have fewer 10,000+ tons Large Freighters and don't have a big boost like the Empress of Britain, that's sure!

Heya Lines,

I don't recall offhand, but I think they are reasonably close. They might average a tad smaller. (and certainly lacking the Empress of Britain is part of that.) But just a little bit smaller on average.

That being the case, it's certainly not an ADVANTAGE to allow players to use the optional ones if they wish.

Just my .02,
Greg

PS you could always alternate contacts between original and optional charts, per the rules.

Thanks Greg.

In fact, I didn't ask for a players' choice but for a general change: either completely replacing the original [T1] and [T2] for this tourney, OR adding them with a fixed percentage to use alternate ship ID (i.e. 1-2 or 1-3 on 1D6).

Thanks, Greg!
So no need to start some number crunching here :-)
Saved me a lot of time.

I have always used the optional sheet when I have rolled a number that has already been sunk. I find that to be a good use of it.

Were we not supposed to be using the Optional Target rosters in the first tournament? I was rolling a 50/50 for each small and Large Freighter to see which roster I'd use. Since it mentions them under the Increased Historical Targeting optional rule, I thought we were using them.

Same here, I figured that is what it was added for. I have even rolled up the same target in a single convoy contact.

Increased Historical Targeting was added for [14.3.2], roll again, when you roll a ship, that's already been sunk.
[14.3.3] is not even a rule. It's just an information that there is an optional target roster.
Anyway, I don't have a problem with players using it.

Hey Lines, maybe some house rule is needed so everyone plays similarly.

A call to all those lost U-Boat Kommandants, there are still NINE spots opened! If you can fill these spots by Friday hostilities can commence this weekend.

I guarantee you will have a great time, even if you are sunk/captured on the first patrol. Though that would be a bummer...

Guaranted indeed... If your U-Boat is sunk, scuttled, or captured during the first week of play, you are allowed to re-start once with a new Boat.

Frank, you really need a house rule for an almost equal target roster in such a luck based game?
Actually nothing in the rules, even in the Historical Target section, say that the optional roster is used.

But I'll add a sentence to the ruleset.

Thanks Lines.

I'm a rules-guy. I just need to know IF we can/should/must use optional rosters, and if yes, HOW to use them (i.e. at will/randomly/only if normal target already sunk/other?)

I know this is not the direction you wanted it, but I decided to go for the easiest solution: No optional roster.
Anything else would have caused more explanation like when to use it etc. and imo it´s not worth it.

I´m sure you´ll have fun anyway ;-)

No problem,

Besides, I always have fun with The Hunters.

I rolled 2 times ID#34 in the previous tourney, unfortunately for small freighter each time. Maybe this time... arrrh
