We like the phantom quite a bit -- we play by the standard phantom rules, but we also add in the additional rule that the phantom is allowed to "haunt" a road or city that is already occupied by somebody (including you). In other words, since it is invisible, its placement can override the rule that "the placing player may not use a follower to claim any features of the tile that extend or connect features already claimed by another player."

You can use this haunting ability to complete roads/cities that belong to others and pop in at the last minute as it's completed in order to split the scoring ("paratrooping"), or you can reinforce your own claim on a contested road/city (like the effect of the big meeple).

However, you don't always have to use this haunting ability... you still have the option to use it as per standard phantom rules -- as either a regular follower or as a second follower (which can, for example, score a completed feature while another regular follower commits to a new feature).

I think this adds even more depth to the game and opens up the use of the phantom (as well as developing its ghostly theme slightly more).

Has anyone else tried something similar?
