When using a card like Sherlock or Eli that allows the runner to click to break subroutines, does the clicking replace the Icebreaker all together, meaning they don't need an Icebreaker of the correct type and strength, or do they still need a proper Icebreaker and the clicks just replace the credits they would normally spend for breaking subroutines?

Apologies for what must be an ancient question by now but, if the answer is here in the forums, it's buried under layers of subsequent, more sophisticated discussion regarding the use of these cards, as opposed to a basic rules check. (I have this problem pretty frequently actually.)

when ICE or a subroutine has an UNLESS condition or the card has the option to spend a click to break a subroutine (bioroid), the runner does not need any icebreakers to use such an effect.

Another example is pop-up window, which does not require an icebreaker to pay 1 credit and proceed.

Think of it this way: The question is answered by the fact that the ability to break subs with clicks is granted by the ICE, not an icebreaker. If it was on the icebreaker, then a strength match would be required.
