Reading this thread got me thinking about a full draft version of A Game of Thrones.

The idea is that the House Starting Positions, cards, and influence track positions will all be drafted by the players before the start of the game.

The House Cards will come from all the House Cards available in base 2nd Edition and the Arryn cards from AFfC expansion (no DwD because I'm not much experienced with it and I don't know how it would affect things).

The Draft

The different categories to be drafted would be:

Starting Position on the Board ("House")
Strenght 4 House Card
Strenght 3 House Card
Strenght 2 House Card (1)
Strenght 2 House Card (2)
Strenght 1 House Card (1)
Strenght 1 House Card (2)
Strenght 0 House Card
Iron Throne Position
Fiefdoms position
King's Court position
Seeing one Card of your choice from the top of a Westeros or Wildling Deck (this last one is ment to get the amount of Drafts to 12, only the guy who picks this gets the benefit)

However, this wont necesarily be the order we'll draft in.

Assuming we have players A, B, C, etc. we'll draw and see who goes first, second, etc. in the draft.

The first player (Player A) will choose a category to be drafted and an item from that category, for instance "I'll choose Strenght 2 HC, Balon Greyjoy". Then Player B would choose a STR 2 HC, "Davos Seaworth", then player C, etc.

After every player has chosen one HC we start another draft, but this time we shift the position, so that Player B is the new starting player, and he chooses a new Category. If player B takes "King's Court Position", then he automatically has the Raven and the rest of the players in order take the different positions (C:2, D:3, etc.)

We keep going like this until 6 categories are taken. Then we reverse the whole order (F, E, D, C, A, B) and start over again until all 12 categories are taken.

Card changes

Arryn cards that refer to "The Eyrie" would read "your home area".

Davos Seaworth would read "If your STR 4 House Card is in your discard pile (...)"

Is this game for you?

There's no reason to go to the waitlist for this kind of variant. I'll simply take applicants, and if someone jumps in late and is higher on the waitlist than someone else, I'll figure it out. I will be modding this game myself.

Through the first days, we'll need everyone to be on top of this, or the draft will take forever. After the draft is over, taking actions once a day will be enough.

So if you're a dedicated player and want to give this a try, go ahead and apply here.

If there's enough interest, I'll give the game a proper number, post the rules, and all that stuff.

Draft variants are quiet common actually. I do not have the time to join another game, but there is always interest in HC drafts.

You should definitely turn this into a PBF.

I'd like to give this a try! I'm a new BGG member, but I have the board game, and have done some drafting with my friends before.

It's because you didn't want to player A have the first choice (category and item in it) and also Westeros/Wildling card?

I am not sure if the concept is fair for players E or F, but I would like to try. I am in mood for Variants

Basically, taking first pick the first categories is more valuable than taking first pick on the last categories (because the "best" categories are probably taken).

So I thought it would be unfair if the guy who gets first pick in the first category then gets first pick again on the 7th, while a guy who got his first first pick on the 6th then gets first pick in the last category.

The order as I proposed it would be:

ABCDEF
BCDEFA
CDEFAB
DEFABC
EFABCD
FABCDE

FEDCBA
EDCBAF
DCBAFE
CBAFEC
BAFECA
AFECAB

Alternatively, we could just reverse the order like this:

ABCDEF
BCDEFA
CDEFAB
DEFABC
EFABCD
FABCDE

FABCDE
EFABCD
DEFABC
CDEFAB
BCDEFA
ABCDEF

It seems similar enough. Probably better, but I'm not sure.

Players E and F get two "mediocre" picks.

A gets the best pick, but is then stuck with the worst pick (probably the second HC str 2 and 1 picks, because the cards with cool efects -Ariane Martell, Balon Greyjoy, Roose Bolton, Alayne Stone, etc.- will already be taken).

Hi all, I'm keen! Will check 2/3 times a day and love a bit of role play. I've followed some of the games where players draft house cards and even the new thread where they are creating their own house cards from all the abilities (very maverick!) so would love to give it a go.

So a couple of questions:

Do we play with 6 players?
We have 7 sets of house cards so there will be cards that are left out right?
Also apart from the arryn house cards, are we looking at basic second edition rules? Or adding the victory condition cards?

Looking forward to it!

I would be up for this if you still have a spot open. If not Ill definitely be interested in following as it looks like a fun variant.

Edit: Also in regards to draft order you could do like Arkham Horror does for turn order. That is the person who goes last goes first the next turn.

ABCDEF
FABCDE
EFABCD
DEFABC
CDEFAB
BCDEFA

etc etc.

Blakmage, I'm terribly sorry, it seems I miscounted and we already had 6 players!

If the game works I'd love to give it a try playing myself, so perhaps we'll find a Mod and you can join that one.

I will now draw for the order in wich the draft will take place.

The players are:

angryelf97
theknightofcups
SmallMan_BigShadow
charemski
stugreer
bagisbjorn

Highest number gets the first pick:

angryelf97 1d100 = (14) = 14
theknightofcups 1d100 = (98) = 98
SmallMan_BigShadow 1d100 = (11) = 11
charemsky 1d100 = (35) = 35
stugreer 1d100 = (84) = 84
bagisbjorn 1d100 = (74) = 74

The Knight of Cups has the honor of the first pick.

The order is:

A: theknightofcups
B: stugreer
C: bagisbjorn
D: charemsky
E: Blakmage86
F: SmallMan_BigShadow

We'll go with this order of drafting:

ABCDEF
BCDEFA
CDEFAB
DEFABC
EFABCD
FABCDE

FABCDE
EFABCD
DEFABC
CDEFAB
BCDEFA
ABCDEF

theknightofcups, you can go ahead and choose a category and an item in it if apliccable.

I'll try to write up a detail of all the HC available at each tier in a while.

Every player has been sent PM's. Please remember to suscribe to this thread and check it frecuently.

To clarify:

theknightofcups must now pick a category and an item in that category.

This means that he can pick one of the following:

1 - ANY one House Card (the rest of the players would then choose HCs of the same Strenght in order)

2 - Any Influence Token (Raven, Blade or Throne, the rest of the players would be put in order following him)

3 - Any House (meaning he'll have that House's Banner and Starting position on the Board, and the rest will choose Houses in order)

4 - To know, before placing orders but after the Draft is over, the first card to come up in a Westeros Deck or the Wildling Deck of his choice. No other player would benefit from this.

Just to confirm, it is the actual cards from the game and not the versions you have printed above right? The Viper has two swords in the game but you wrote one (I think I saw another detail wrong but I take it you did it from memory and/or made a plain mistake).

Does Blackmage get a roll of his own or will he use the roll angryelf got?

Edit: Ignore the paragraph above please
