I have a request for a microbadge.

It should be named "$20 chip fan". It should be a green circle with "$20" printed on it. Artistic merit welcome but optional as far as I'm concerned. I would buy it and contribute GeekGold to the person who posts it.

There seems to be a controversy among 18xx players about whether chip sets should have $20 chips or $25 chips, and I'd like to display my opinion through a microbadge. I suppose someone from the other camp might request a "$25 chip fan" microbadge, as misguided as that would be. We could see which one sold the most.

I am definitely a $25 chip fan, personally, but I was under the impression that green was the 'standard' colour for a $25 chip (don't ask me who defines the standard).

I've seen all kinds of colors for chips, but green is commonly used for either $20s or $25s (I've never seen a set with both.)

MeepleSource.com has 25's in green and 20's in gray, which I thought was the "standard" $1 color. These are mini chips, in wood or plastic. Never tried them as I have a set of 14 gr. "clay" chips that are all I'll ever need. These mini chips are actually quite a bit more expensive than what I paid PokerChipsWholesale for my chips two years ago. $20 chips were not available there.

My impression is the same as yours. Green $25's are standard and common; 20's have no standard color and uncommon, and would probably not be green in any poker set that follows the standard color scheme.

However, if you prefer to play 18xx games with $20's (and I can see the logic of that), your best option is to repurpose your green $25's as twenties. So the proposed microbadge makes sense. It kind of suggests the meaning "I use my $25 chips as $20's".

I'm firmly in the green $25 camp, but that is because most of my poker chips have values on them.

My set has 20's in grey. (The 1's are white). This matches the list of colors described in this article: http://boardgames.about.com/od/poker/a/chip_denoms.htm.

I'll think of something witty to put here...

$1 chips are often white, grey or blue (in US Casinos), but white is the "most" standard.

$20s are often grey or yellow. I chose to go with yellow for my set, because it's a better colour.

$20 chips and yellow chips are both hard to find though, so I ended up with undenominated Dice chips because you can get them in lots of colours.

It appears that an enterprising microbadge designer could market an entire range of product to 18xx fans, given the variety of views on these chips!

My understanding is that poker chip colors vary by location:

http://poker.wikia.com/wiki/Chip_colors

I suggest this easy fix:

Use $25 chips in green, since that's what poker players are accustomed to.

But in games like 1846: The Race for the Midwest, $20 payments are very common. So add a number of cyan-colored $-5 chips to your bank. This way, when you need to pay to lay a track, you can pay with one green chip and one cyan chip.

(Cyan is chosen because it's the negative of red, which is the typical color for $5 chips.)

You just need to make sure people don't put those cyan chips in their pockets!

The science of history is a great bulwark against the stream of Time; in a way it checks this irresistible flood, it holds in a tight grasp whatever it can seize floating on the surface and will not allow it to slip away into the depths of oblivion

I took up Eric's request and made a couple of microbadges - mbmb

There was some discussion about what color was appropriate for the 20s, but ultimately we settled on green. If there is proper outcry I could probably make another, but until then I hope you all enjoy arguing with these
