I currently use VASSAL (version 1.0) because of lack of space.

I use VASAL dice, but read results on physical charts.

Lately, I generated ships ID using website http://obercraft.de/hunters .

I intend to give VASSAL version 2.0 Ship ID generator a try for my next career.

And I report my plays at:
http://obercraft.de/hunters
and like bryan at:
https://sites.google.com/site/wolfpackgmafia/
via the geeklist: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/167130/the-hunters-ger...

and my survival record in the geek list:

VASSAL 2.0 - see one happy user here!
I love the new target mechanics therein! Especially the CVY draws can turn out to become real work when I re-engage the same one several times. The tonnage-log seems to be a little buggy when summing up.

But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you… And I will beat you.

I have no idea what you are asking here. Much less the last two question. As for Vassel I looked at the module but I had a Great Playing mat made from the "Huge Board" file. I use Lines GREAT counters and My torpedo counters. I also made a 1/700 Submarine U-Boat VIIC/IXC Hasegawe model to accent the encounter wheel I'm using on my playing board/mat, very immersive game play.

I play German Military/Beer Drinking music for ambiance.

This is my game board!

Actually - I just looked at it and asked myself: "If not by themselves, do they mean they have someone who makes the *Kabooom* for them?!?"

But the real point is: you play beer drinking music for U-Boot ambiance!?!

I have a playlist on iTunes with 1930s and 1940s songs that were popular in Germany in WW2 - I made it for playing Silent Hunter III, but it works for this game too.

It is better than drinking beer before playing or I'd move in close in broad daylight with G7a's in 1943 to sink a 1300 ton freighter. So the music has to do till I'm done with the patrols.

American Jazz?

Something U-boat crews enjoyed, but was illegal to listen to in Nazi Germany.

Yeah, that's a lot of what I play. Here's my playlist:

J'attendrai (Rina Ketty)
Ohne Dich (Stormy Weather - Comedian Harmonists)
Maple Leaf Rag (Scott Joplin)
Muss i Denn (from the Das Boot soundtrack)
Let's Misbehave (Irving Aaronson)
Lili Marleen (Lale Anderson)
Cheek to Cheek (Fred Astaire)
Georgia on My Mind (Mildred Bailey)
My Blue Heaven (Don Voorhees)
Stormy Weather (Ethel Waters)
Stardust (Hoagy Carmichael)

When my 2nd printing copy arrives, I'm thinking the soundtrack from Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan fits the bill. That's just a submarine movie in space anyway, RIGHT???

So far I have resisted all temptation to buy a six-pack of Beck's to consume (at the rate of half a bottle per patrol) whilst playing--

I saw a photo in which a returning German submariner was drinking a bottle of beer right after stepping back onto dry land. It was in fact a bottle of Beck's, and the label looked the same as it does now.

I'm a writer and therefore I'm a little quirky and socially inept. The basic idea is, "The Hunters" is my reprieve whenever I get fried from thinking too long. I take a shower, I sit down in my ginormous La-Z-Boy recliner in my movie theater (my play room), naked or pretty near it, throw my big comfort blanket over me, put the game on a tray that the housekeeeper has for my breakfast, set the charts over by me. Then I put on a college lecture that I know pretty well (because, I don't really THINK about it as I'm playing, thus giving myself a delusion that I'm actually not wasting time playing a game where I'm a Nazi). All set? I grab three Coke Zeros because the tray and charts are on me and I don't have anymore room--almost. Then, my 85 pound dog that was a beaten pound puppy jumps on my lap (because he doesn't trust anyone else). I make room for him on the recliner. The huge chair rebels at the new weight. Finally ready, I play the movie, roll for my mission and begin. Yes, I admit it, I'm weird. But then once baseball season starts, I'll have something to watch every night whilst playing. So, beat that all you simpletons. Try playing it damn near naked--it's fun. It's quite fun. As if I wasn't creepy enough, (ON THE BIBLE), I just recently bought a captain's hat and the four Knight's Cross variants. Why, yes, I do play your game looking like a naked version of the Village People.

Beat that.

I answered this one 'never' but I have posted a couple of session reports here; I make no claims on greatness or lack thereof, and leave that as an exercise to the reader.

PS Don't listen to music when playing the Hunters, but I DID enjoy the built in option in the old computer game Aces of the Deep to play period music from the radio room.

Big Thank You to all who participated!

The outcome is pretty surprising to me.

I would not have expected the high number of players who play the real thing only. Although you find me infront of a monitor most of my daytime I play the Hunters basically via vassal, though.

The other result that also surprises me here is how few put bigger effort in their war diaries. I would have guessed that this kind of reporting would make a bigger part in the role playing aspect of that game - seems like it does not.

Either that, or those who do put effort into their war diaries are too busy playing to comment.
