Excellent points about theme. I second all of your thoughts there. Theme is very important to me as well. Certainly not a be-all end-all, but strong theme that works well with its mechanisms usually makes for a great game. For me, much of the fun of boardgaming is the escape that it provides for a few hours. Strong theme helps with that. Althogh I love some purely abstract games that have little or no theme (like chess, etc.), my favorites tend to be those with strong theme.
