Pre-child:
- staying up late
- going out for dinner at least once a week
- junk food at home in case I get peckish
- heat turned down low to save money
- sleeping in on weekends
- looooooooong naps

Post-child:
- flu courtesy of him playing with other children
- no junk food at home
- no staying up late unless you want to pay for it the next morning
- heat always turned up
- never sleep in again - at least not until he's a teenager
- looooooooongish naps, as soon as he naps

And we have a lot of help from family! I tip my hat to anybody who is able to raise a child alone as a single parent. You are stronger than me. Hell, with the flu, a rickety cardboard box is stronger than me.

As a dad with a wonderful wife and three slightly crazy but damn good kids, I have one word for single parents.

Respect.

I have no clue how you folks manage to do it. My wife and I lean on each other so much in order to not kill our little ones. Keeping that all together on your own? I tip my hat to you.

I look back at my parents raising two kids, working 60+ hours a week each, with mortgage rates 5 or 6 times what they are now, and I wonder how they did it. Well, really, they did a terrible job with me, based on how I turned out, but they definitely got it right with my younger brother.

Maybe that's the key - keep having kids until you get it right!

Who in Chit Chat wants to come be my live-in caregiver? I am willing to pay in burritos, games of Age of Steam, and foot rubs (not by me - by my cat).

Pre-child - You care what you look like when you leave the house.

Post-child - You still make sure you don't look like crap, but no need to look great every time you leave the house.

Sounds like we might need to set up a ChitChat edition of the baby Hunger Games.

So now, all three of us are sick tonight. This should be a fun night of "you sleep for 5 minutes, I sleep for 5 minutes".

Pre-child: You could never imagine a situation where you wouldn't freak out if someone peed on you.

Post-child: You've learned to diaper a child with lightning speed because you freaked out when someone peed on you.

Kids is not any different than college.

Everything smells shit, piss and vomit. Someone is always awake making noise. Dirty clothes everywhere.

Delirium to the point that you don't care that you just left the house with mismatched shoes and puke on your shoulder.

It's fun, it's healthy, it's good exercise. The kids will just love it. And we put a little sand inside to make the experience more pleasant.

You know, they say there was a man who jumped from the forty-FIFTH floor? But that's another story...

The best part of everyone being sick in the house at the same time is that often the children get better far quicker then the parents.

Then they expect you to act normal.

It's freakin' amazing.

Morning update:

Child - raging bloody nose after having a runny nose for days.
Father - still weak, not quite recovered from flu, not wanted by the child under and circumstances
Mother - angry at Father for being a lunatic, tired from a night of comforting child and at Father for snoring like a warthog

All in all, a great morning. No, don't worry, Chit Chat, we're just fine.

Pre-child(ren): Weekends are for fun!
Post Child(ren): Weekends are for cleaning the house and doing laundry because you're too damned tired to do it during the week.
