Can the defender take one of the stone walls as a loss or are only archers, soldiers and veterans taken as losses?

I'm in the middle of a game now, and would love to know also. The rules talked about a wall as if it were a unit, so it's confusing.

Wall pieces contribute to your combat strength at that section but You can only take losses from melee from units(archers, soldiers, veterans).

Wall pieces are not lost in combat (but can be lost other ways like siege engines)

If a wall in unmanned than I believe that wall has a strength value of zero.

This is incorrect. Wall pieces on unmanned wall sections still grant melee strength. However the wall pieces on an unmanned wall can not kill invading units if they have higher combat strength than the invading units at that wall section.

If the invader wins the melee at an unmanned wall section then there will be a breach as there are no defending units to reduce the combat strength difference to zero.
