When my group gets together, we usually end up taking a while deciding what game to play before we get started. Between games we have been rolling a D12 (excluding the person that picked last) and then highest roll gets to pick the next game.

I would like to mix that up a little bit, and maybe add a little bit more fun to the evening.

I am looking for suggestions for short, fun easy games that have a definite "Winner" that we can use to decide who gets to pick the next game

Prefered
1 Under 15-20 minutes for setup, play and takedown
2 Simple for new players
3 Fun is good
4 Cheap and/or easy to PnP
5 Supports up to 7 or 8 players (or can easily be scaled)
6 Has a definite Winner

What are some other methods that your gaming groups use/have used to pick the next game on game nights?

King of Tokyo sounds like excactly what you need.

The time varies, honestly I dont time my games but I imagine 15-25 mins depending if its short or abit long (which it rarely is)

We use Le Boomb! to decide start player, and I can see it being as useful for determining the player who picks the next game. It can support as many players as you can seat around the table, too!

No Thanks! - 5-10 minutes total time, quick, tactical. Unfortunately it only goes up to 5.

Rock Paper Scissors (there are like 6 entries for this on BGG?) exists of course; I just mean the normal game. Naturally the best multiplayer version - everyone goes at once, nothing happens if one or three types come up, loser(s) get eliminated if two types come up. I would recommend two groups if you have more than 4 people.

We Didn't Playtest This At All sounds exactly like what you're looking for. I've played games that lasted 30 seconds and never taken more than 10 minutes. It's silly, short, and cheap.

Flowerfall meets all your criteria, except that it doesn't play 8. (It does play 7.)

Well, and fun is subjective.

Can be fun and fast games and all of them allow you to get only one winner

A quick Blink Tournment can also work

Have fun

It can only support from 3 to 6 thought, but really fast, simple and fun. Faster than King of Tokyo if you wan't to play with 6 people I believe.

Coin game

You have a big, thin looking coin; in Norwegian currency that would be a 5`er. You sit opposite each other. One places the coin on the edge on his side, and using only three pushes with the thumb, shall place it on the opposite edge. Then he flips it up and catches it in mid-air. He spins the coin on the table, folds his hands and try catch it between the thumbs. The other makes a goal by putting his thumbs against each other and the index fingers on the table tob. Now it up to the one with the coin to score within the goal. First one till 3 wins!

We played it a lot during recess at school.

It's perfect for what you're asking for. I've only played it with its out-of-the-box maximum: 5 players. But I imagine you could buy/print two copies and have them simultaneously going around the circle, like a race to keep them going and gaining points. The game would take no longer than 10 minutes. Possibly less than 5 depending on how fast people pushed the double-time idea.

Have fun!

A seller included a copy of Start Player in one of my orders that I don’t want or need (not my sort of thing).

If you would like it you can have it for the cost of shipping. Let me know.

And after I dug it out I discovered it’s a copy of Tiebreaker, not Start Player. But from looking at the cards it looks like you could still use it to decide a start player.

If you want it, you can still have it.

Sorry about the mix-up! blush

Slide 5 / 6 nimmt! would work - you could just play a single round, instead of playing up to 66 points.

I also know a gamer who uses We Didn't Playtest This At All for this very reason. It's very random and often times its over in a shorter amount of time it takes to deal out the cards.

I'd also highly recommend Coup. It is one of my top five all time favorite games, and everybody I've played with loves it. It is currently out of print, but a new printing is coming in the next few weeks. You can pick it up for $10 on Cardhaus.

But Love Letter plays only up to 4. You could scale it with 2 copies, though.
