After several two-player games, we have been experimenting with a move ship variant. Rather than first player placing ship one, then ship two, we instead have player one place a ship, then player two place a ship, then player one place his second ship, and player two place her second ship.

So far, we prefer the variant as it seems to reduce the edge of first player in the placing ships action, and requires each player to carefully consider each ship placing since a player is most likely to only get their first choice in trading posts, rather than both.

I like the sounds of that.
We'll give it a go!

Oops.

We'd always done it this way.

I don't like it. The first player has no gold, which might lead to all kinds of missed chances. He should at least have first move.
